Began our drive in UNESCO heritage colonial town of Galle. Heading north along the coast we stopped at Hikkaduwa home to the Tsunami Memorial honoring the tragic 2004 disaster when the Samudra Devi train was struck by the waves killing almost 1700+ people within few minutes which is the most heartbreaking moment of loss. Nearby we also explored traditional moonstone mines where local artisans unearth shimmering gems from ancient layers of earth. Continuing toward Bentota where the landscape softens into lagoons and mangroves to take a river safari past waterways and islands with Buddhist temples trying fish therapy as tiny fish nibbled our feet and a daring photo shoot with baby crocodiles if you’re brave enough. Along the way we visited turtle rescue initiative where endangered hatchlings are nurtured and released back into the sea.
