At least 23 cars parked on campus at St. Joseph’s University were vandalized this week, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Well, the search is on right now for the
vandals that caused thousands of dollars
in damage at St. Joseph's University
this week. Police say at least 23
vehicles had their windows smashed while
parked at Hawks Landing garage. Some had
items stolen from inside as well. Action
News reporter Becca Hendrickson live
outside that garage in Winfield now with
details on how police are responding.
Becca,
>> Brian, most of the cars broken into were
in that garage. The vandals went up
several stories to get to them, too.
Others were parked right here on the
street outside of the dorms. You can see
this one has the glass smashed in. All
of that is scattered on the seat.
Some cars have trash bags taped to their
passenger windows. Others have broken
glass scattered on their seats and
shards encrusted in the doors. Thousands
of dollars worth of damage has been done
to vehicles parked in Hawk Landing
parking garage and lot on St. Joe's
campus and students are frustrated. It
was all over my seat. It was all over
the ground. Bailey Fermal says she found
her car in the garage with the window
busted out Wednesday night and quickly
learned she wasn't alone.
>> All the cars adjacent from me were all
broken into as well.
>> Police say the smash and grab spree
happened Tuesday at the garage on North
54th Street. So far, Southwest
detectives have reports of 23 cars
damaged.
>> The MO is the same, broken passenger
side window.
>> Investigators say they believe there are
two suspects. In some cases, they only
smashed a window. and others they stole
from the car, too.
>> Even change out in the open, that's
still an opportunity for somebody to
break into your car, which you might
only have $20 in change, but now you got
to pay $300 for a window.
>> Victims say while they hope the suspects
are caught, they're still upset about
the cost of this crime.
>> It's affecting a lot more than just one
person. A lot of kids here use their
cars as their only way of
transportation. So, not having one and
having to pay what, like a couple
hundred bucks out of pocket isn't really
normal for a college student to try and
fix.
Police are hoping that surveillance will
help, too. You can see plenty of cameras
in these emergency call boxes here as
well. The university says it's working
with police and that they're increasing
patrols in this area. Live here in

>> Thank you, Becca.
