It's time for a Bible story.
I love my B.I.B.L.E.
All right, which story are we talking about today?
Today, we're talking about a story found in John 8.
Okay, I'm interested. Keep going.
It's the story of when Jesus writes in the sand.
Wait, like finger painting in the dirt?
That's yucky, bruh.
Well, no. You know what? Let me just tell you the story.
I'm all ears.
Okay, so one day Jesus was teaching in the temple.
Yeah, okay, so let's say, hypothetically,
that I have a friend who has no idea what a temple is.
A friend, huh?
Yeah, her name is Cheryl Van Lunchable.
Your friend's name is Cheryl Van Lunchable?
Yeah, don't worry about it. What's a temple?
Help me explain it to her.
Well, tell Cheryl that a temple is a place where people worshiped God.
Oh, wait, like a church?
Yeah, kind of like that.
Are you on the phone?
Yep, I'm telling Cheryl what a temple is.
Wait, hold on.
You actually have a friend named Cheryl Van Lunchable?
Yes, she's a real human being.
See, the way you're saying it right there
makes me think there's not actually a Cheryl.
Hey, Cheryl, I gotta go.
This guy doesn't believe you exist.
Okay, anyway, Jesus was teaching in the temple.
Which is like a church.
Yep, and suddenly a group of Pharisees.
Ugh, Pharisees again?
What?
The Pharisees ruin everything for Jesus.
It seems like in every Bible story,
a Pharisee comes along and is just like a mega downer.
Jesus tries to heal someone, bam, Pharisee.
He tries to be nice to someone, whoops, here comes the Pharisees.
Those guys are just the worst.
I mean, they did present a lot of problems for Jesus,
but the main reason they were a problem
is because they wanted everyone to think
that they were super religious and righteous.
Righteous?
Like, what do you mean?
Like, uh, that's totally righteous.
Like, how's that ice cream cone?
Oh, it's righteous, dude.
No, righteous, like right standing with God.
They wanted everyone to think that they were closer to God
than anyone else was.
But they weren't.
Nope.
So anyway, the Pharisees came barging into the temple,
dragging along this woman.
And they tell Jesus that they caught this woman sinning.
And the law says that they can stone her.
What? Stone her?
What does that even mean?
Well, back in the Bible days, if someone broke the law,
they could be stoned to death.
Which is where a crowd of people
would all throw rocks at you until you died.
Whoa, that is pretty intense.
Yeah.
And the Pharisees brought in this woman to stone her?
They were asking Jesus what they should do with her.
In a way, it was kind of a trap for Jesus.
Either Jesus would say, let her go,
which the Pharisees would say
that Jesus meant sinning was okay
and it's okay to break the law.
Or Jesus would have to sentence her to death.
Pharisees.
So what did Jesus do?
Seems like a lose-lose situation for Jesus.
Well, Jesus acted like he didn't hear them
and he knelt down and started writing on the ground.
Ooh, the silent treatment.
Gotcha, Pharisees.
What did Jesus write?
Like maybe the word Pharisee
and then like scribble it out.
Oh yeah, that's what I would write.
I'd write Pharisee
and then scribble through it a bunch of times
and then like stomp on it.
Then I'd be all like, you see this, you Pharisees?
This is what I think.
You guys, stomp, stomp, scribble, scribble,
stomp, stomp, scribble, scribble, stomp.
Wow, the Bible doesn't actually say what he wrote.
Some people think he wrote words.
Some people think he was just drawing
in the sand while he was thinking.
Wait, like just like doodling?
Maybe.
And that's pretty cool.
Yeah, yesterday I was doodling a picture of like a hamster,
but he had like a unicorn horn
and he could like breathe fire and play a tuba,
but it's like a hamster.
So, you know, it's like a little tiny tuba.
You think that's what Jesus was drawing?
I hope not.
Jesus was basically ignoring the Pharisees
and they kept asking him what to do.
Man, that lady who was caught sinning is just standing there
waiting to get stoned to death
and the Pharisees are all pestering Jesus
and he's writing on the ground like everything's cool.
Yeah, but then Jesus stands up and answers them.
He says to the people accusing the woman,
whichever one of you has never sinned,
you may be the first one to throw a stone at her.
Then he gets back down and starts writing in the sand again.
Whoa, Jesus just totally turned the tables on them.
Turn those tables.
My, how the tables have turned.
Yeah, so when Jesus said that someone without sin
could throw the first stone,
the Pharisees all dropped the stones they were holding
one by one and they walked away.
Because they were a bunch of sinners, Pharisees.
We've all sinned.
I guess that's true.
So after the Pharisees all walked away,
Jesus stood back up, looked at the woman
and asked where everyone who was accusing her was.
They gone.
Jesus said, didn't anyone stay to condemn you or judge you?
And the woman answered, no one.
Then Jesus said, I won't either.
Now go and don't sin anymore.
But wait, wait, Jesus never sinned.
Correct.
So Jesus could have thrown a stone at her.
That's right, but he didn't.
He forgave the woman and told her to go and sin no more.
Wow, she was caught sinning and Jesus forgave her.
That's right.
And he forgave us too.
Oh, that's pretty awesome.
Yeah.
And well, that seems like a pretty good place
to end our Bible story today.
So.
Can I say it this time?
Sure, go ahead.
What's the line?
The end.
Oh, right.
Yep, yep.
The end.
Great job.
