NASA is rolling out what they’re calling “Plan B.” Basically, SpaceX isn’t going to be the only contractor anymore. Instead, the door is opening for other players, including Blue Origin and, interestingly, some of the old-school aerospace companies that love those cost-plus contracts.
Now, according to Duffy, the whole point here is to “leverage competition and innovation.” Translation: get more companies racing to deliver, so things actually move faster. And honestly, that makes sense, especially since SpaceX has been catching some flak lately for falling behind schedule with Starship’s lunar lander. NASA’s worried the 2027 target might start slipping.
Meanwhile, Blue Origin’s been quietly making waves with its Blue Moon lander. It’s showing some real promise, and yeah, people are starting to wonder, could Blue Origin actually touch down before SpaceX? NASA hasn’t said that outright, but the whispers are getting louder.
Now, Duffy’s announcement? Definitely not music to the ears of anyone who’s all-in on Starship, especially its biggest believer, Elon Musk. You see, every time people criticize Starship’s slow progress, Elon jumps in swinging, defending his creation and promising that SpaceX is still the fastest ship in the fleet.

So, what about Blue Origin? Could they actually get us to the Moon before China does?
Well, Elon Musk doesn’t seem to think so. In fact, he recently fired off a pretty brutal comment on X, saying, “Blue Origin has never delivered a useful payload to orbit, let alone the Moon.”
