SpaceX Starship Has a Way to Clean Up Orbit - Nothing Like It Exists
Have you ever wondered where a rocket's upper stage goes after delivering its payload? It doesn't escape into deep space. It doesn't fall back to Earth. It simply drifts — orbiting silently, joining thousands of others from launches past.
In fact, over 15,800 metric tons of abandoned hardware now circles the planet, and if even a fraction of that debris collides, the chain reaction could permanently seal off access to space — not for years, but for generations.
That scenario keeps NASA awake at night.
Fortunately, SpaceX already has an answer — a new Starship variant Elon Musk calls "Hungry Hippo."
How would it work, and why can nothing else replace it?

“Maybe we should make a ‘Hungry Hippo’ version of Starship one day to collect and de-orbit spent rocket stages and other space junk.” This is what Elon Musk just confirmed recently.
It may have sounded like a joke, right? But if you consider the rapid progress we’ve witnessed from Starship, this is actually something SpaceX could realistically achieve. In fact, it may even be an early hint at a future role for Starship.
And honestly, SpaceX probably should do it — because the long-term sustainability of Earth’s orbit may depend on solutions exactly like this.
Why do I say that?
