After walking up the path we came to the highest point possible for a rainy day.

The rock formations at Hanging Rock are the result of a volcano erupting and the lava flowing.

During eruption this thick lava cooled in and close to the volcano's vent rather than flowing away.

As it cooled, vertical fractures formed in the lava which would become Hanging Rock. These fractures have subsequently been the targets of erosion. Wind, rain and ice have enlarged the fractures to produce the distinctive pinnacles, deep crevices and the jumble of massive rocks which form a complex labyrinth within the Rock.
