Benjamin, Rianne & Gerben
Yesterday we sailed up front to Chioja. It's a little bit down of the Venice.
Mirko, it's not Stefan, it's Mirko. He came with his wife and his friend and he's gonna
take us for sailing today. So you built it and how long did it take you?
Two years. Two years. And I heard a little bit more about the story of Mirko.
He never sailed before. He wasn't a sailor.
We are Rianne and Gerben and this is our son Benjamin. We made a few mistakes in life and
experienced some challenges. Cancer, bankruptcy, depressions and a divorce. They ignited us in
creating our reality. For now sailing around the world to find our home somewhere on our planet.
So welcome to our weekly vlog from raw sailing to slow living. Embracing the race of life.
Good morning. Buongiorno. Yesterday we sailed up front to Chioja. It's a little bit down of the
Venice. And we dropped anchor here on the open sea and we had quite a rolly night. It was really
going like this. Because today we are going into Chioja because we traced the sailor. Maybe you
remember from the previous video with the small classic boat. Modern classic boat during the sail
race. And it turned out he built the boat all by himself. Hopefully we're going to sail together
because we found each other on Instagram. I just want to know so I'm going to take you with us.
And it was quite misty last night so we couldn't see anything. But now
it's getting, the sun is coming. So that's cool.
Shailu.
Buongiorno. Yes you go to the playground.
It's misty still. It is. But that way it isn't. No because that's the sea and there's more wind
than at the land side.
Okay captain.
So we are moored here in Chioja. And Mirko, it's not Stefan, it's Mirko. He
came with his wife and his friend and he's gonna take us for sailing today. And we had a warm welcome
by Guido. Guido is following us on YouTube as well. Yes. And he has a beautiful wooden boat
that I will show you. So only beautiful boats over here in Italy. Beautiful people.
Great.
What's the name of the boat? Gloria. Gloria. Like my daughter. Like your daughter. And you built it
yourself together with the two of you. With my friend. Yeah. So you built it and how long did it
take you? Two years. Two years. And one year before for the design. Okay. Only during the weekend.
Only in the weekend. Only in the weekend. The boat is made in all in aluminum. We cut about
CNC laser. Yeah. Every piece. And me and my friend weld together. Wow. Yeah. But are you welders from
profession? Yeah. No, no. Before build this boat, no. Okay. I don't know how to do. I study on YouTube
how to do TIG welding. Really? Yeah. Wow. I watch a lot of YouTube film from America. Yeah. Where
there's a lot of TIG welders. So we just had a prosecco and now we go sailing. And I heard a
little bit more about the story of Mirko. He never sailed before. He wasn't a sailor. But then he
decided I want to sail and I want to build my own boat. So he bought a book of an English man who
built his own boat. And then he started. And he did everything by himself. By searching on YouTube
to finding videos about how to weld. How to design. And he did everything by himself. It's really
yeah. It's incredible. And now we go sailing. Really.
No I think Mirko it's I think it's wonderful. We saw your boat during the race for the first time.
And then we were both we were thinking wow what a beautiful boat. And then we got in contact. And
then now you're telling me you you're not a sailor. You were not a sailor. You were not a boat builder.
You couldn't weld. You found everything on YouTube. And now we are sailing on your beautiful boat.
It's dangerous. No I don't think it's dangerous. I think it's a beautiful story. And I think
what you said. If you if you put your mind. If your mind is open.
You can achieve anything. What's your biggest advice to to people who wants to start sailing.
Or wants to do a project like you do. Only you do what you want. Only do what you want.
And you put everything. You made everything electric. So all the sheets. The main sheet.
And the jib. You made it electric. And also the engine. Okay. We have a 10 kilowatt. Yeah. Engine.
Okay. September. October. It's very strong. Yeah. So I have to put the gas on the top. Okay. To go
out to the sea. Okay. And when we go back we have a new battery. Okay. One day my my wife and my
my son. We go back from Caorle. Okay. We find a storm. Okay. We find a storm outside. Yeah. No
problem. After that we arrive here. No wind. We arrive more or less 200 meters from the marina.
The water is like a lake. Yeah. No wind. We go this side. We we look everything black. After
two or three seconds 50 knots of wind. We have a mainsail and jib open. Wow. Because we don't have
battery. It was very scary. But at the end I lost my mainsail, my jib,
not my life. Wow. But it was broken. It was. Yeah. I have to cut the the rope. Yeah.
But the wind is too strong.
It's a pleasure to sail with you. Thank you. No. Me too. I like to see your story.
Because my mind is in a lot of New York. But my dream is arriving in New York by sailing.
You like sailing. You drive a Divende. Yeah. And you like to sail into New York. Yeah. I want to
sail with my boat. Yes. In the Hudson River. So we share the same dream there as well. Yeah.
Wow. So you're going to join to the Atlantic. My mind is 47 feet. Like this. Yeah. I think that's
a perfect size. This is going to be a new project. New project. For two years? Two years.
I think the next boat is going to be faster. Yeah. Because you learn to start it.
Yeah. But 47 feet it's toilets.
How wonderful. With all the knowledge and experience available on YouTube Mirko could
learn and create his own dream. When I saw Mirko I had to think about the following poem from John
Chapman and it goes like this with a little bit of my own. Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits.
The rebels. The troublemakers. The round bags in the square holes. The ones who see things
differently. They are not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote
them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
Because they change things. They push forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones,
we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to sail the world, build a sailing yacht,
with no experience in sailing, yacht design or welding, are the ones who do. Mirko worked for
two years every weekend together with his best friend after one year of designing. They created
this beautiful modern classic day sailor to achieve his dream. And his next dream is to build
a 47 feet with the same design. Cross the Atlantic Ocean to sail up the Hudson River in New York.
Man, that's what we call feeling the breeze. Mille grazie Mirko and family for sharing your dreams
with us. While sailing your beauty, helping us doing groceries for our crossing going south.
We will wait for you in New York. Buona Fortuna. The Croatian coastline is over there.
And we are almost direction of Pula. So we made the C65 not go miles.
We moved to the Croatian coastline. So we have some shelter from the islands.
And now we are going south. Hardly any waves.
Making miles and up to tomorrow there's good wind for going south.
