SpaceX revealed Unexpected Starship Flight 11 Heat Shield Damage: Better on Flap BUT...
What made Starship Flight 10 so memorable?
It was the brilliant orange-white glow that engulfed the vehicle’s heat shield during reentry—a fiery spectacle that captivated viewers worldwide.
Flight 11, however, impressed for the opposite reason: the absence of that blazing effect. Rather than a downgrade, this marks a major leap in progress. The mission showcased how SpaceX has refined one of Starship’s most critical systems—the heat shield—achieving greater stability and efficiency. The upgrades worked flawlessly, proving that SpaceX’s improvements are paying off.
So how did SpaceX perfect the heat shield this time, and why does it matter so much for Starship’s future?
Let’s dive in and find out on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.

We have once again witnessed an extraordinary and inspiring flight of Starship. And incredibly, it was another complete success. In many ways, this mission was even more successful than Flight 10. But why is that the case? What made Flight 11 stand out as a genuine leap forward for SpaceX’s engineering achievements?
Although Flight 10 was celebrated as a success, it was not without its issues. The most prominent problem was clearly visible—the heat shield of Ship 37, which displayed a striking orange and white coloration during reentry. Elon Musk later confirmed that the phenomenon was caused by a coolant leak that oxidized the metallic heat shield tiles, creating those fiery, metallic hues. While the visuals were mesmerizing to the public, the situation raised serious engineering concerns. For a fully reusable spacecraft meant for multiple missions and long-duration flights, any oxidation or damage to the heat shield poses a risk to reusability and long-term reliability.

To address this, SpaceX introduced a range of significant upgrades on Flight 11. One of the most notable changes was the adoption of what they called the “crunch wrap,” a new configuration designed to strengthen and seal the areas around the tiler. The metallic tiles that caused oxidation in Flight 10 were also removed. Additionally, a few tiles were intentionally left off in select areas to stress test the system and gather more data on heat distribution and material endurance.
The effectiveness of these upgrades was immediately apparent during the mission. The heat shield became the center of attention once again, especially during the reentry phase. From the moment the payload deployment was completed, Starship’s altitude began to gradually decrease as it prepared for the intense descent through Earth’s atmosphere. By the time the mission reached T+39 minutes, the reentry process began in earnest, and the glow of plasma—created by the intense heat generated as Starship met the thickening layers of the atmosphere—became visible.
