In this classic motorcycle maintenance video, we work alongside Dave Mitchell (from Mitchell's Classics) as he shows us how to hone cylinders. Dave honed both cylinders on this engine.
We have here a set of barrels for an A65 we just put back together.
The bores are glazed and there's a few marks nothing bad there's no lip so we can literally
get away with just honing these out and the new set of rings it's only 20 foul oversize so
good condition. Right we took and put the barrel assembly in the vice and we've got vice covers here
just nip that up okay what we do we just spray both the bores we're just going to
quick blow with the airline first a little bit of a coating of WD-40 or the equivalent
because the the the honer needs to cut into the cast iron just take your drill
just take off the cable tie now we give these a good soak too these are the cutting stones
just make sure you don't go too far through with this
starting off slow keeping central up and down movement then we spray as we go
and take it out just squeeze the three fingers in now we're breaking the glaze up now needs a
little bit more what I tend to do is is now we're getting on so well with that maybe put a bit of
normal engine oil because it's a little bit dry but it's cut that out nicely right I'm going to
do a second cut now with engine oil so we're going to put some oil into the bore but also
we're just going to clean out the paste that's been created because we've been taking the surface
of cast iron off and you should see a nice clean bore it might be a few little marks but we're not
worried about that it's just to clean it up now the difference between the two barrels now it's
very different so what we're doing now is we take the honer just take it off the drill we're just
gonna just clean that paste off these cutting stones we do that for the cleaner a little bit
of lube on the second bore just wash that out first I've got a little bit of brake cleaner here
just gonna blow that out now we use the equivalent to wd-40 we do the stones again
just be a little bit careful when you pull your your fingers in on the boring bar that you don't
accidentally activate the drill okay we're ready to rotate a little bit more lube
it's important to keep it moving up and down so it's even as much as possible
squeezing the fingers
just wipe this quickly and see where we are with it that's good what we do here we do the same
again we put a little bit of oil on those on those stones just finish that off I'm just using a
bit of brake cleaner to get rid of the paste that's down the bottom
just move that around with your fingers wearing the glove though
just make sure we've got plenty of lube in there
right both boards now are okay all done and I'll show you we've got rid of there was a little bit
of scoring that really doesn't really show now there's a very very faint lines but won't make
a difference thing about what we've done here is we've glaze busted got rid of that glaze
so when we put new rings in here the bore now it's got something to bed into
if I take it out the vice I'll try and show you you've got a nice finish you've got a finish
which is is not polished but it's nice and smooth it's great slightly grainy so put new rings in
that will bed in nicely and hold the oil as well what we're looking for now is a regular home
pattern and if you look in here you really see a nice finish the whole way down that's why you
mustn't stop you must keep it up and down movement in regular speed and there's a couple of little
lines where it nipped up a little bit of debris got in there but that won't be a problem probably
if you look at these pistons you can see a few marks on here you can see the lines where
probably dirty oil and it's little pickup points here has had a bit of a seizure here a nip up
but what we're going to do with this clean the piston up the bores are good new set of rings
they'll be fine there's no need to replace that well as I say I'll use it as a as a hack to go
to work on but it's in good order it doesn't need lots of money spent on it yeah it's good
