If you’re thinking of getting one of these cute teddy puppies, here are 10 things you need to know about TOY POODLES to help you decide if this is the right breed for you!
Hey guys, welcome back to another video. My name is Jessie. I hope you're all doing well.
So today's video, we will be going through 10 things that you need to know about toy poodles
before you get them. Before we get into it, make sure you hit that like and subscribe
button to see more videos from me. Number one, the breed characteristics of toy poodles.
For the size, they're not taller than 10 inches tall. Their weight is three to six pounds,
so two to three kilos. Their coat is made up of a single coat with dense curly fur. There are
many different colors of toy poodles. So there's grays, silvers, blues, browns, and cream. There's
also black. They don't shed. They're friendly, social, and obedient. They have a high intelligence,
easy to socialize, can be quite destructive when they are left alone. They are definitely a
people-oriented breed. They are good with children and moderate to high energy level.
Let's dive into these in a little bit more detail. So number two, we're going into grooming.
One of the main reasons people choose toy poodles is because of their hyperallergenic fur. They have
very minimal shedding. However, their fur does need a lot of grooming and maintenance. You will
need to be brushing and combing it daily to keep it from matting and to keep on top of tangles and
sweep away dirt and debris before it can actually accumulate. It would also need to be trimmed every
six to eight weeks. Number three is training. Toy poodles are really intelligent, which makes
them really easy to train. Toy poodles can actually be a little bit timid and nervous sometimes,
but positive reinforcement and the correct training can actually help them go really fast.
They also need mental enrichment. So things like toys, puzzles, treats, rewards to help with their
mental stimulation. They are dogs that love to please. And when they are trained properly,
they take in information really fast and they can make really great companions.
Number four is separation anxiety.
Toy poodles are great for companionship and they reciprocate your love all the time. However,
when they are left alone for long periods, they do develop separation anxiety. They don't like
to be left out and they want to be with you all the time. And they can become quite bored and
stressed out when they're left in the house alone for too long. So if you are getting a toy poodle,
just make sure that you have enough time to actually spend with them and look after them.
Number five, exercise. So even though toy poodles are small, they love to join you on days out and
they love exercising and they're really energetic dogs, which is why you need to provide them with
plenty of opportunities to exercise. They need to be walked at least an hour a day at a minimum.
They also need to be stimulated at home as well mentally with toys or fun and games.
Number six are toy poodles good with children.
Although toy poodles are a loving and exceptionally friendly breed, they are not
recommended to actually be left alone with small children because they are so small and so fragile.
However, they do make excellent dogs for families with older children. So kids will definitely need
to be a little bit older before they can be left unsupervised with a toy poodle. So you'll need to
consider how likely it is that your toy poodle pup could accidentally get hurt. They are small
and fragile and most children will easily outweigh a toy poodle. But toddlers are still clumsy and
they can fall onto your dog. The dog can end up seriously injured. Other than that, poodles are
really sociable dogs and they are great around children and other humans. Number seven, feeding
and diet. So two factors you need to consider when feeding your dog is the size and activity
level. You should be really cautious when you're feeding your dog table scraps because it can lead
to obesity. A high quality dog food should be chosen for your toy poodle. If you get kibble
that's especially made for them, there will be less fat, less carbohydrates than the food that
you feed larger dogs. Nonetheless, always consult with your vet if you have any issues with your
dog's diet and nutrition. Number eight is barking. Toy poodles aren't really known to be barking all
the time. However, when they do bark, it is due to things like being left alone, thunderstorms
to protect you against strangers, noises, etc. To protect themselves, boredom or excitement.
However, barking can be controlled with the correct training and socialization. Number nine,
life expectancy. Most poodles on average will live long and healthy lives and their life expectancy
is around 10 to 18 years. And finally, number 10, we're going to go through the pros and cons of toy
poodles. First up, pros. Because of their size means that toy poodles take up less room than
other poodle sizes. This can be useful if you're living in a smaller house or an apartment. They
are smaller all over, which means there is less space to groom than larger dogs. They're one of the
smartest dog breeds, really intelligent and take well to training. They're really social dogs and
love spending time with their family. They have minimal shedding and are great for people who
have allergies. They excel in agility and are one of the most friendly, well-tempered dogs. So now
to the cons. Their coat is really high maintenance. Toy poodles require a lot of attention and can
develop separation anxiety if they are left alone for long periods of time. It can also lead to
destructive behavior if they are left alone for long periods of time and due to boredom. Toy poodles
can be easily hurt by children who do not know how to handle dogs. So that is all for our video today,
