Tallinn. 14th Century beer + food in traditional restaurant.

My name is Karl and this restaurant is called Olde Hansa. So tell us about the beers, because you do delicious beers here, don't you? Yes, we have our own house beers. They are the dark honey beer, the light cinnamon beer and the dark beer with herbs. And they are made with some honey concentration and also some herbs which are monks in the cellar put together. And also some cinnamon, as saffron and cinnamon, all the spices were really, really expensive back then. Yeah, they're so delicious, I can recommend the beer. And basically, first the restaurant dates back to the 14th and 15th century. And to be exact, it's 1457 was when the restaurant itself was like... It wasn't a restaurant at first, it was a storage room for merchants. Right. And the main house, which is up here to our right, it consists of three houses. Just along from the restaurant is the actual merchant's house and you can see the pulley where they used to pull the stores up to the window. The main thing that was transported was wine. Right. And they were stored in barrels and shipped overseas. And because the taste would deprive over the ages, we put some spices in the wine, so the taste would still be there and would still come back. And is the food traditional? Yes, the food is traditional. Everything which we serve is the medieval cuisine. So we have no potatoes, no tomatoes and stuff like that. Columbus was still lazy back then in the 14th century. And everything is put together by our master chef. And they thought out this cuisine that has no tomatoes, no potatoes, some saffron also. It has some saffron and then it has some turnips, sauerkraut, everything that was available back then. Delicious. Yes, the address is Wene-Uksteil. This was definitely a medieval experience.
