Piraeus Riviera, Marinas, Sandy Beaches, Go-Karts...yes, it is not just for Athens
Piraeus has crystal clear waters, modern marinas, beaches, yacht clubs, and go-carts and there is not a ruin in sight. It is classy and relaxing, it is fun and vibrant, and, it is apparently near some old ruins.
If you have been to Athens many times, it might be time for a rest. You can even sample both on the same day. Piraeus is along the east coast of the Saronic Gulf, eight kilometres southwest of Athens’ city centre. It is sometimes called the Athens Riviera. The A1 bus goes from the port area along the coast road and is quicker than the metro but you can do Acropolis in the morning, see Athens and get to the beach using the Metro.
Even if you are planning to visit the ruins, this is on the same Metro ticket, and if the weather turns bad in the Mediterranean, some Greek islands like Mykonos and Santorini often become impossible so ships can stop in Athens for a couple of days. We have missed all the islands twice now, and once had three days in Piraeus.
Here are some of the beaches you will find on the tram ride Jean shows you in the film. They are all excellently managed by the Greek National Tourist Organisation
Votsalakia Beach. It is a popular pebbled beach with a volleyball court and many restaurants and cafes.
Glyfada Beach is a sandy beach with watersports, bars, restaurants, and cafes in the area.
Varkiza Beach is sandy.
Voula Beach is known for its party atmosphere and has been awarded the Blue Flag for its clean waters.
Vouliagmeni Beach - has lots of sunbeds and shades and very clean toilets! Cafes, bars and restaurants.
See the tram route and explore after you have watched the film in which Jean also finds some beachside shopping centres.
