Allen's test for Blood Flow - Hand Examination - Dr Gill
When performing an arterial blood gas from the wrist, it is essential to confirm that the palmar arcades are intact and that blood can flow from the ulna artery and the radial artery through these palmar arcades and back up the arm.
If the blood flow is not demonstrated passing through the arcades, then Allen's test is considered not to have been passed, and the procedure to perform an arterial blood gas is not permitted to proceed forward
