Jugular Venous Pressure (JVP) Examination - Clinical Skills - Dr Gill

Whether you viewed the JVP, as the jugular venous pressure, or the jugular Venus palpation, it remains a core part of both the respiratory and the cardiovascular examinations. Literally, working as a manometer of the right atrium,, the JVP is vital to determining if there are issues with the right heart, be that from a cardiovascular perspective, such as congestive cardiac failure, or whether or not that is from the respiratory side of things, such as raised pulmonary hypertension.

In terms of checking the JVP, the classical approach, is to assess the internal jugular vein. However, it is possible in certain circumstances, to be able to utilise the external jugular vein, within the café at that the tortuosity, and the presence of valves may render it unsuitable for use in certain patients

In terms of assessing the JVP, by using the hepatojugular reflux, this is a potential source of discomfort for a patient, thus it is very important to ensure that it is performed appropriately
