The St Matthew Passion, widely regarded as the pinnacle of Bach's work, was probably premiered on Good Friday. The performance at St Thomas's in Leipzig in 1727 has haunted the history of music for nearly three centuries. Performed several times during Bach's lifetime, the piece spearheaded the rediscovery of his work in the 19th century. Almost a hundred years after its premiere, Felix Mendelssohn performed a version of it in Berlin, restoring Bach to his rightful place at the forefront of the German musical heritage, a position he has held ever since.
