In this week’s episode, we explore a multi-storey family home designed to balance modernity with warmth. The architect and owners spent two years on its architectural design and construction, resulting in a calm and cohesive living space ideal for family life and entertaining.
We've been living in our new home for a year now,
and we spent about two years on the architectural design and construction process.
My family and I enjoy seeing the east.
It's such a charming neighborhood with a great mix of experiences that fit our lifestyle perfectly.
When we first started working on the design,
we wanted a relaxed interpretation of a modern theme.
It'll be cozy enough for our little son to grow up in,
and also open and welcoming when we have guests over.
The design approach focuses on openness and bringing in natural light.
We've got open-plan living areas and large glass facades
throughout which let in plenty of sunlight and airflow.
The original layout of the house had uneven ground and a short runway,
which made the entryway feel pretty tight.
Together with our architect Juliana,
we landed on a view of elevating and widening of the steps.
Not only did this open up the space and create a nicer floor,
it also helped us to work around the uneven terrain.
As you walk into our home,
we have steps that create a statement
and a timber ceiling adding a touch of warmth to the space.
The open design, which folds from the walkway into the hall and wet kitchen,
creates a smooth connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
It allowed the space to feel bigger and more flexible,
both visually and functionally.
During the day,
we'll open up the bi-fold sliding glass doors
for natural ventilation and sunlight to flow through.
Our TV feature wall and staircase
were designed as a seamless piece with the wide platform,
almost like a sculptural element.
The overall interior is minimalistic with a soft cream grey palette
so that the dark accents from the dry kitchen
and the richer furniture colour tones can cut through.
We envisioned the dining space as a place
where people will gather to share meals
and have convivial conversations together.
To soften the area,
we broke up the geometry with a round dining table and a pendant light.
We've also added a mirror backdrop as an aesthetic expansion
and to give the illusion of a bigger space.
The dry kitchen has a monochromatic theme
but with a sleek and clean design aesthetic.
My husband loves spending his mornings
playing around with his coffee machine first thing after he wakes up.
The island serves as a food prep area
and also doubles up as the tok panjang
when we have friends over for dinner parties.
Thanks for watching October's Point.

Reimagine a sleek and minimalist stairway
that balances openness and light with a monochrome theme.
The roof was rebuilt with a skylight
and we chose an open riser design
for the stairs to let as much natural light as possible
from the attic into the house,
especially on the second floor.
Since the stairs face the main hallway directly,
it was important for the stairs to have a strong design feature.
We eventually went with a cascading black structure,
glass railings and timber flooring
to add a hint of luxury.
One of the mood boards we shared with Juliana
was inspired by a lovely property we stayed in San Sebastian
which had an amazing boutique hotel luxury vibe
with a touch of modern Victorian aesthetics.
With that in mind,
the room is coloured with soft bluish grey accents
and we added bits of warmth with a rich timber vinyl for contrast.
We went for an open and spacious bedroom layout
with a generous space between the bed and the TV console
for our son to play
or have enough space to set up a tent for camping movie nights.
Like the rest of our home,
the bedroom was designed with an open concept
with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass windows
that can be fully opened.
Since the master bedroom overlooks the facade,
we've added an external pivot screen
which works both as a minimalist sunshade
as well as a flexible design feature.
We wanted to have a bit more fun with the attic
and break away from the monochrome theme.
Drawing inspirations from Marrakech
since it's one of our favourite vacation spots,
we brought in early colours like ochre and deep blue
through a simple furniture mix
to create a warm and relaxing vibe with bright open feel.
We used this area as a space to host with friends
or for a sundown vino
as it's a perfect space to soak in a view of the city
or catch fireworks during the annual National Day Parade.
We have been taking it slow intentionally
to progressively add to the house
as we settle in and feel the vibe.
We've been really thoughtful about what we bring in
from small details like cushions and vases
to bigger furniture pieces like sideboards and cupboards
and even the perfect painting for the living room
which took us a year to find.
It's a safe and spacious place for our son
to run around and grow up in
with special corners for each of us to find sanctuary in
or communal areas where we can hang out together.
We've got spots to create beautiful memories.
