Bobby Wit stepping to the plate for the
Royals who are down four against Toronto
looking to make a comeback in the fifth
inning. This breakdown is brought to you
by SeatGeek. Spinning his bat, getting
ready. Spinning his bat, getting ready.
We got a runner on first base. We got
ball one high and outside. The one pitch
little curveball breaking ballesque
thing. One and one back in the count.
And then fast ball off of that, but he
missed. Two in one count. Bobby Wit's
looking to put it in play. He's looking
to make some stuff happen. 89 miles per
hour. Not sure what it is, but it's
caught in center field. They go to
double up the runner on first. Oh, wait.
No, he's safe. What? What? Bar's looking
around. You say I didn't catch it. I
caught it. What did you call it? Was it
a catch? All right, let's take a look.
Here's what they called it. It's a third
base umpire who is going to signal no
catch, no catch, no catch, no catch.
Now, you can review catches in the
outfield, not catches in the infield.
But yes, that is what happened. He
signaled no catch, no catch, no catch.
The base runner saw the signal from the
third base hump. He got to second, so
it's a single, but they say challenge
the catch. Yeah, we're going to
challenge that. We're feeling good about
it. They're nodding. They're like,
"Yeah, he caught Okay. I know. Thought
he did. Thought he had vars says, "Thank
you very much." Yeah. Okay. Well, let's
let's take a look. Put on the jumbotron,
please. They all look up center field
and they're going to see the replays and
this is what they see. Here's one angle.
Pretty far away. Clearly comes up with
the ball. Let's zoom in a little bit.
It's grainy, but okay. In his glove.
It's never loose. Comes up with the
ball. All right. Another angle. In his
glove.
Never bobbled or loose. comes up with it
again. Okay. To me, looks like a catch.
Let's see what the Ms say.
>> The call on the field stands. No catch.
Toronto loses their challenge.
>> Whoa.
>> What? Now, I saw all those replays I
just showed you and I was hot cuz me and
MLB replay the way they do their
reviews. We don't get along. I'm not a
fan of it. I don't I think there's much
better ways to do it. So, I was like,
"Give me this footage. Let's break it
down. How did this happen?" And then I
got the footage and I broke it down. And
now I know I know how it happened.
Because the way MLB does it is you need
to be 100%
convinced, without a doubt, the call on
the field was wrong to overturn it. And
this right there, I think, is what they
saw. And they said, "Well, if the ground
didn't exist, does he catch that ball or
did the snow cone catch, the ball hits
the grass and it is secured?" That right
there, that's the spot. I'm guessing
that is what MLB Replay saw. He said,
"Well, we we don't know. That ball could
have been a little loose, hit the
ground." Now, I don't think it was. I
think it's a catch, but it was ruled no
catch. and you need the most
overwhelming evidence ever to overturn
that. So, yeah. Well, I think that
that's a catch.
I understand what MLB did. I don't agree
with it because I don't agree with the
whole process, but the process they have
in place, I understand why they made
that call. Again, I don't agree with it.
The catch rule is the hardest thing in
cricket. It's really defined and it's
ridiculous because you can make a diving
catch with one hand and then as you you
dive if you're still securing the ball
perfectly but the ball hits the grass
they'll rule no catch. So I don't like
that ruling that they have in cricket.
But I like the black and whiteness of it
because players now they make a they
take a catch and they hold their hand up
like as if they're in water and you
can't bring the ball underwater
otherwise the catch doesn't count. like
they just they make sure the ball
doesn't touch the grass. And if that was
the rule, I think maybe baseball players
would get used to it. Uh I just like the
no no ambiguity of it. But on this play
for me, that's a catch. It feels like
it's getting harder and harder and
harder to get calls overturned in Major
League Baseball. As we go on, more
things are standing than ever. That's I
don't I don't have the stats to back
that up, but that's how it feels to me
is just like it's impossible to get
things to get overturned cuz you need
the most evidence in the world. The Blue
Jays say, "Sorry, pitch. You're out." It
should have been a double play. It's
not. And now here's a double play. It's
not. Missed. Now the runner advances to
third. It should have been out of this
thing. It's got a hole in it. What's
going on? My glove. It wasn't me. My
glove must have a hole in it. Not
because I placed it wrong or mistimed
the throw. I mean, that's funny. Uh,
it's just got a hole in it. I can
appreciate some self-deprecating humor
out there. Next batter comes up, he
scores. You would have been out of the
inning if it was a double play if the
runner did not get back to first on the
catch that they called the no catch. Six
to three. Still only one out. We've got
another base hit by Salvi. Now it's six
to four cuz Vinnie's booming around the
bases. He touches home. Two-run game.
Still two on, only one out. Hump back
line drive. They double them up. Pitcher
fired up. He loves it. Base runners not.
Maybe that's just a little bit of
evening the fields from the baseball
gods. Anyway, what do you think? Is that
a catch? Is that not a catch? How do you
fix the rules? How do you fix the rules
so that things are what fans deem them
to be? Or do the majority of you think
that's not a catch? I'd be shocked. But
