Old English Sheep Dog Rescue

[Music] Mark here, my wife Tara, and welcome to the 10acre woods. This sunny, cold day, uh it got down, we had some frost last night, uh and uh 6° right now, so it was kind of uh overcast and rainy and really windy the last few days. Uh so >> yeah, the sun's out. Re-energize, recharge. Oh, there's a train. >> So, uh, the last couple days we've had Dewalt had some excitement. Tarantana. >> Oh, crazy couple days. >> Yeah. So, uh, there was a, uh, couple dogs that were at a property. Uh, the owner, an elderly woman, she passed away. Uh, and then I guess somebody went to visit or check in on them and, uh, found her and the dogs. And so dogs needed somewhere to go. >> We don't rescue dogs. >> We don't do dogs, >> but we couldn't say no. >> And we have nine black cats. >> We don't do cats either. Uh but generally we don't do cats and we don't do dogs. So um we do farm animals here on the farm. So uh Tara and Tiana went to get the animals or get the two dogs. So, what they're old English >> Old English sheep dogs. >> Old English sheep dogs. So, >> so we took them into the vet and uh had them all done up and then uh brought them home here and uh just sweethearts and uh then >> train >> train. Yeah, should be all right. >> It's like a rooster. >> The audio should be this way. So, we brought them home. It's pretty loud. uh you know spent a lot of time with them and and uh then found them a home with a family. Amazing family. Uh really really good vibes >> and they do have one. >> So yeah, they've got a male and these were two females. So um so that worked out really well and it was a nice nice fit. Uh the two two dogs are uh are really good temperament. >> Very good temperament. Very good energy. just not ours. >> Yeah. >> I mean, you you know you Yeah. Yeah. So, we did good. We did good. But it was exhausting. It was uh a lot of brain power, a lot of emotions, a lot of, you know, we couldn't say no. We had to help. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. We're just getting it ready. Uh, Satara's chopping up some carrots >> and apples >> and apples. And we got a bunch uh donated. So, that's uh nice. So, they're uh in good shape. Just not at the best before. So, they're starting to get uh past that date. But, you know, they look good. They look great. So, we can put them to good use instead of having uh food waste. So, that is great. morning routine. Just get the uh the carrots and apples and whatever other vegetables that we uh we do get here uh that come in. Uh they go to good use on the farm, especially melons. Uh the chickens love the melons. Sorry ladies, there's no melons today, but we'll uh >> they had cucumbers. How's their cucumbers? >> We'll keep an uh Well, there's nothing there, so >> there's nothing there. Nothing in the other one? >> No. Okay, they they had uh cucumbers. >> No, no cucumbers. So, I guess uh they enjoyed the cucumbers. When did you put them out? Yesterday. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> All right. Good. >> Which are a natural dewormer? >> Yeah. The seeds. So, the seeds in um you know, cucumbers and watermelon. Watermelon. No, pumpkin. I don't know if watermelon >> any of your like c cucumber seeds um the small like cucumber uh >> uh cucumber >> well cucumber pickles >> pickles yeah like and that style seed is has a chemical in it that's a natural dewormer and for the larger animals like the same thing but in your squashes your pumpkins >> squashes >> um so no not water >> yeah maybe not water I Yeah, I got a little excited there. I think I might want some watermelon cuz I saw it the other day. I'm like, "Oo, that looks pretty good." And it's getting near the end of the season, I think. >> Here. So, but I almost bought some the other day. I guess that's why I had it on the brain. I'm like, "Oh, those are ah $12 for a watermelon." Ah, it's just flavored water. Flavored textured water. >> Right. >> It is good though. >> Also, I'll make you a flavored sponge. Oh, what is Oh, Charlie. Charles. Oh, poor baby. Yeah. I don't know if uh Petey and Piper are back. Charlie, [Applause] you so excited for breakfast. Um we saw Oh, yeah. Look at the girls and all the duck geese. Yeah, hang on. It's coming. Um, yeah. No, they must still be out back. So, Petey and Piper, uh, early in the morning, they'll head out back. And they haven't done it for a while, but in the past couple weeks, that's where they've been going. And what they're doing is acorns are starting to fall. Okay, guys. All right, we get it. I don't have anything. Wow. H everybody, it's very noisy here on the farm in the morning. Uh so what happens is and they know about this uh they go back and they get the acorns. Now this morning we saw Petey buy a pile of brush that we've piled. We were looking at that and looking and seeing no acorn trees in the area. And then I had a thought. I I I got a bunch of squirrels and chipmunks around. I bet you what's been happening is they have been collecting them and putting them in little spots in the brush. Uh, and you know, Pey has been finding it. So, that's probably why he's going over to those brush piles. He's picking up the stash from the uh from from the squirrels and chipmunks. Oh, man. You'd think somebody was dying or something. Pigs are Uh you you girls are being nice. Yes. Nice and quiet waiting. Well, girls, I guess two of them are boys. Okay, I think they're Yeah, there we go. There's mommy. [Music] Yeah. grains come out first and then the uh the veggies are at the bottom. >> Yeah. [Music] Oh boy, he gets so excited. So does Tucker. Look at Tucker. >> Barry. Barry's got his apple. Oh, and he runs over there. He's like, "What? What? I'm here." Yeah. No, it's on the ground. It's on the ground there, Barry. >> I'm grabbing him a carrot. >> Of course, he needs a carrot. Yeah. Got apple. >> There we go. And the little birds come down from the tree. Everybody knows it's breakfast. Actually, Tara and Tiana were out in this building here uh a couple nights ago and it was late and they came out through the sliding door which is amongst that Virginia creeper there. They came out through the sliding they opened it up and and Tiana said there must have been like 50 little birds that just flew out. I guess that's where they hang out at night. So, it was uh it was interesting to see. Oh, now look at how quiet it is. Oh, that's one of the sheep go. H and the call ducks. >> Good boy. >> The three boys. We We thought they might fly away. We were a little concerned with them. Uh cuz they can fly. But um but no, they're hanging around, hanging out, staying here. They know uh where a good thing is. Yeah. Oh, Charlie. Marlene was out the other day and she said, "You know, you should see if you could film the pigs and their noises cuz she could fall asleep to that." [Music] All right. All's quiet at the breakfast table and Barry has his Oh, his carrot. Yes. I guess rabbits do prefer carrots over apples. [Music] Tucker, are you wanting more? Is that not enough for you? >> All three of them are in here. Oh, the hay. Of course. You know, some people don't eat treats. Some people prefer a staple diet. And that's these three. >> Oh, and Bronwin. Oh, there she is. Yeah, >> likes her. >> Yeah, Brunwin. I didn't even see her. I just knew that she was going to be hanging out. >> She likes her stable. >> Yeah, she's still a little shy. Yeah. But she knows she knows she's loved, right, Bronwin? Yeah. You just don't do humans. [Music] [Applause] >> Oh, did you see that air the cold air breath? >> Oh, no. I didn't catch that. Yeah, it's that time of year. >> She No, just you just see her breath. >> The cold coldness. Although it's supposed to be warmer next week. So, >> we got two more weeks. Yeah, I think we just hit a cold snap. Just a reminder to make sure things on the farm are in order. And the main thing is the uh the water hoses cuz we have broken some of those splitters in the past >> where it splits from one to three or four. >> Yeah. And it's frozen and it's leaking and spraying. So, >> yeah, we're going to have to go look at our our barrel duck. >> Oh, sorry. You did >> you didn't take the peeppole there. No, not yet. I uh didn't actually come out for food this morning. >> I've got the camera set up in there. So, um I we'll have to go have a look and see how she's doing. Nothing nothing uh is happening yet. >> Want to come out and eat. So, there could be one pipping. >> Could be. Yeah. >> Could be. >> Well, and I have noticed that when she gets off to go out and do her groceries or whatever she does, >> um she Yeah. She covers them all up and it's like I'm looking at it going, "Where are the eggs?" Yeah. >> But then she comes back and she all and she uncovers them. >> Yeah. >> Oh, Sheldon. Sheldon's in. >> Hi, Sheldon. Hi, monkey. You like your hay? >> Yeah. >> Get your nose right in there. Look at N's going to be so full of hay. >> I know. >> Shimmer. >> It's his um Well, see, he wasn't sheared. Well, and the sheep that we have don't have really wool on their face like >> Well, yeah. And his wool is very soft and plush. >> So, hay just sticks to it. The only thing around it is to get him a jacket. But to have a jacket on him, >> that's not natural. He's got a jacket. It just gets dirty. So yeah, he's uh of course he hasn't been sheared because he's not, you know, he's only a year old. Well, not even a year old. So it'll be interesting to see how he um how it goes at shearing time next year. So lots of picking involved. Are you guys full now? Yeah. Yeah. Good. Okay. They're um they're feeders, but they're a little big. >> Figure out. >> So, there's four of them. There's uh three more right over there. And we were going to put them along the inside of this building, but they >> take up the whole >> Yeah, they take up quite a bit. So, we may need to do some cutting and some rewelding or something to that effect. We'll figure that out. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Oh, they're all out there. Oh, you're feeding them out there. Okay. >> Yeah. I think they almost expect it. They're like, "We're in the sun over here. We don't want to eat in the shade." So, here's uh here's an oak tree here. And if you go and you look, you can see all of the debris down here. But if you come over on this side, you can see all the acorns, right? So, there's a ton of acorns, but as soon as you get to the line where they can reach, then uh there's nothing. So, what I've been doing, you see all out here, this is all acorns. I've been collecting them and then putting them in my pocket. And uh the um the goats love them and of course the pigs love them and so do the horses. [Applause] Okay. Meadow doesn't know what she's uh what she's doing. She's like, "Okay, give me the hay. You've given everybody else." There we go. And quiet again. Right, Astrid? >> Okay, so Tara, quick garden update. >> Uh, so we've had two frosts so far. Looks like the chibives made it through. Um quite a few of the things like uh your tomatoes, your uh squashes, those are done. You should have harvested those before the last the first one. >> Unless you live in warmer climates. >> Unless you live well the first frost, right? >> Yeah. >> Um but now the carrots and we're also getting the lettucees that'll pop back up cuz they like the cooler uh the cooler temps. These guys bolted in the heat. Yeah. >> Um but of course carrots were underneath, right? >> Yeah. >> Peppers. I left just the tiny tiny ones if they come back and we got two more weeks. We may get a couple more peppers, but pulled all the big guys. Uh these tomatoes were left, but it looks like they got hit. These are your tiny Tims. Your tiny tiny Tims. >> Tiny Tims. >> Yes. But they're very potent. >> Oh, are they? >> Yes. Very potent. Um, uh, what else is in >> the hascaps are early on, >> so we had a bunch of hascaps or honey berries, uh, come, but the birds stole a lot of them. >> So, I'm not going to get a lofah this year cuz that got nailed. >> Oh, the lofah, right? The lofah plant. Yes. >> Yeah, that got hit hard. >> Yeah. Well, and it'll it comes back, right? It's >> No, lofah's like a cucumber. >> Yeah, it's done. >> So, they're okay. I probably won't try again. I've tried three years to do a lofah. >> Have you? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. And there's no signs of anything, right? >> Well, there was a tiny tiny little flower. Um but that's all they got. I mean, my lofah would be the size of a dime if it was here. >> Yeah, I know. >> Yeah. Just the little >> um >> I guess we'll just have to buy our or Tiana. I think Tiana's the only one that really uses the lofah. So now with the first frost done, these guys, all my herbs, my sage, my catnip, my mullion, uh they will they survive through it. Um and what happens is because the temperature is cooler, what'll happen is the they'll become more potent because the energy goes towards oh protect. So it goes into the leaves and makes them more potent. So now this next two 3 weeks I will be harvesting and dehydrating all my herbs. So, my echania, catnip, sage, mow, uh they'll all be uh coming in. And then these guys, look at the seeds. I'm going to have so much mullion next year. Mullion is one of the it is the best. Like, so we will get we'll get you stay there. >> Um yeah, the I know you can eat the flower like Oh my god. like you just pull the flower, eat the flower, right? That goes in all your little teas and all, but it's the leaves. So, I wanted to get some good seed happening. So, cuz mullion I gift all the time. Um, grapes. Uh, they're done. We didn't get We got We ate a few off of there, but I think the chipmunks came in and stole the other ones. >> Well, I saw one run by here just a moment ago. >> But it funny cuz they're labeled green, but they turned out purple. Um, so these grapes obviously not big enough, but they got the frost. >> Oh, yeah. >> So, we'll just let them fall down. >> Yeah. >> And >> well, and this comes back. >> Oh, yeah. This >> So, this is what I was kind of thinking the lofah was, but they're obviously not. >> No, these grapes will continue to get bigger and bigger. See? So, they didn't get big enough. But, you know, I didn't get them till what, July? >> Oh, yeah. >> Yeah. So, >> yeah. Well, it's an investment, right, into some grapes. >> There you go. There's your salad. Especially if we come outside for anything and he hears us, he will uh he'll hang out in that area and he's like cuz Terra will throw him apples and such. Uh no, maybe not. Hurry up. I left these ones and they looked >> if they happen to come back, they like if they happen to grow, they grow. >> Yeah. Looks looks a little >> You can tell which ones are kind of ready when they're velvety. >> So, I left all those. >> Okay. >> But yeah, so it's just the odd little one. >> And we have a bunch of tomatoes. And we made salsa. >> I made a couple batches of salsa. Really good stuff. >> I'll never go back to storebought salsa. >> No. >> No. It's just >> It's just a paste, right? >> Yeah. >> And real salsa is just fresh. >> Fresh. >> So, >> so yeah. There we go.
