The concept was bold and ambitious: instead of relying on rockets, fuel, and traditional launch infrastructure, SpinLaunch aimed to revolutionize space access by hurling payloads into orbit using a giant kinetic launcher. If successful, it promised to make launches faster, more flexible, and potentially far less expensive.

However, achieving that vision has proven to be extraordinarily difficult. To this day, the company has not been able to bring the Orbital Accelerator anywhere near its intended operational capacity. In light of these challenges, SpinLaunch has recently shifted attention toward another major project, one that could redefine the company’s path forward. That project is called Meridian Space, a planned satellite constellation system.
SpinLaunch appears to be betting heavily on this new initiative. According to recent updates, the company has secured $30 million in new investment to develop Meridian Space, with backing from existing partners such as ATW Partners and previously announced commitments from Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace. Notably, SpinLaunch raised $12 million from Kongsberg earlier this year, and in 2023, it successfully closed an $11.5 million round of funding. These investments demonstrate that, despite its challenges, the company still holds enough credibility with investors to push forward with new ventures.

However, SpinLaunch’s pivot raises deeper questions about its identity. Instead of launching the Meridian satellites with their own kinetic accelerator, SpinLaunch will likely depend on conventional rockets to meet deadlines. This marks a significant departure from the company’s original mission to disrupt the rocket industry altogether.
