Bonjour. Welcome back to Burgundy. I am
taking you to my friends Kate and
Nathan's new home. You may remember them
from the earlier video I did of their
previous beautiful cottage and early
2025 they moved into this former wine
maker's home and I cannot wait to share
it with you.
>> Welcome to Lison,
>> our new house in Burgundy.
>> Hey, we're Kate and Nathan and we
welcomed you today into our new house
here in Burgundy. We moved to Burgundy
18 months ago permanently from just
outside of Melbourne, Australia. And the
ultimate goal for us was to set up a
business and have a home where we could
welcome guests for accommodation, but
also providing some tours of the region.
So, we're restaurant tours back in
Australia. And now we've set up the
house to do cooking classes and some
catering and private events.
>> So, the house is uh a maison vineyard.
So, it's an old wine makers house. Um,
it was built in 1870
and it was empty for 30 years when we
purchased it.
>> We felt we were we were in the
countryside last time. So, we went with
more of a country feel, very sympathetic
to the area. This we felt we're kind of
in the country. It feels a little bit
like a modern loft as well, like a big
open space. So, we decided to combine
some contemporary um art and objects and
furniture with more traditional from the
old house. And I think it's blended
together really well. Almost everything
you see apart from a couple of new
pieces, the couches and and the beds,
but everything else you see is from
Brokants and antiques stores and vid
granier and things
>> because that that's kind of our hobby
and my obsession is collecting uh
beautiful pieces to to use every day and
and enjoy every day. And I think if you
put all that together, it can work to
make a a cool collection of interesting
things.
We tried to reintroduce some elements
into the house with the the trim and the
paneling on the walls and the ceiling
roses and the the cornice and and things
like that that that give it a bit of
character and and give it a bit of um
kind of that timeless look.
coffee table's a bit unique. If we go to
the other side, you can see perhaps here
there's um ornate detail. It's was
actually an Indonesian daybed and we
found it uh at a local bant and it was
much taller. We cut off the legs. It was
a reddish brown color. Yeah, we've
always wanted a big coffee table like
this for for books and you know sit
around with appero
>> one of our favorite pieces.
>> So in addition to art and cookbooks and
other things we bought from Australia.
This is a crazy piece that we bought in
Jalong at a little uh flea market. I'm
not sure if it was the base of a table
or what it was. It was cream. I painted
it gold by hand and we put it in the
container and brought it with us and
just last week made it into a lamp.
The idea is here that we can fit six to
eight people for a cooking class with
Nathan teaching uh in his in his
favorite place over there and uh guests
can come and learn and experience. It's
interactive. It's really fun. So yeah,
we always wanted to have the big island
to be the center of the the house and
you know the the heart of the kitchen.
So we just wanted this huge space with
nothing on it so we can do the classes
demonstrations but also you know when we
host parties and have friends just
everyone hangs around the table around
the island with food and wine and and
yeah it's a fantastic space. We went
with a local company uh to make the
kitchen for us. Uh they're about 20
minutes away in a small village, but
they did an exceptional job with the
cabinetry. Uh we brought our old oven,
the Lacon, which is very special to us,
which is a Burgundy made oven. We've
been able to have lots of storage and
cabinetry and cupboards where all of our
platters and dishes and glasses and all
of our different cooking tools we've
purchased over the years at Brokants and
and special shops. It's my favorite room
in the house and yes, love to spend as
much time here as we can.
So, we wanted uh to have a little
whiskey gentleman's room, but we prefer
the open space. So I have a a corner
where I can sit and play guitar and
listen to music with the paint colors.
Um it was a real passion of Kate's and
and she did an absolutely amazing job.
We chose some some bold colors I would
say but then also tried to make them
very sympathetic to the the style and um
>> kind of the era as well. They're
historic um colors. Um they are British
British colors from a British uh company
called Faroh Ball and we've used them
throughout the home and we yeah really
happy with the results. All the children
have said, "Mom, can I have my room this
color? I want to move into this house."
I don't know something that about color
that younger children really relate to,
but it was it's been really interesting
to notice that.
>> I think we've actually committed to a
different color in every room on every
surface.
>> Sure.
>> You joked and you said, "If the dog sits
still too long, I'll paint the dog."
>> Yes.
>> But, uh, no, I think it's it's turned
out really well. We wouldn't change a
thing.
This little box was was a very very
sweet, but it does house my little
collection of um knife rests. So, Nathan
bought the poodle nice knife rests
uh for me. We use them as often as we
can and they live in their little dog
box.
We didn't bring very much from
Australia, but what we did bring were
pieces of art and books that meant a lot
to us.
>> Yeah. So, this painting is a a painting
that Kate's dad gave to her, and it's a
a spot in Melbourne that they used to go
and visit and have coffee and yeah,
anytime we would go to the city and in
Melbourne, we would always go here. And
we've tried to incorporate some artwork
that's that's really special to us and
and um yeah, means a lot. And art and
books, I think, are one thing that can
really uh make a home your own. So these
two rooms um this was the original
toilet in the house. Now it um just had
the evacuation point. There was no water
or anything, but this was at one stage a
toilet. And this room was the uh
original bathroom and we've turned it
into a laundry and a additional fridge
and Kate's storage for her brokant
addiction of green and white plates.
It gives us a good space to keep all of
our linens and and towels and servettes
and all the things we need for when we
host guests. The largest pieces of
furniture in the house are in the
smallest room in the house, too.
>> I love it.
>> That was fun.
>> All the china is really accessible, so
there's no excuse not to use all the
beautiful vintage pieces every day.
>> It's a radish bowl and it has holes so
you can actually put them in and wash
them. And this it has a little straining
holes. We bought that at um
the rest this year. Yes.
>> Always looking for very interesting
pieces like that.

this was a corridor, I guess, and we
wanted to make it like a little extra
sitting space also to house our
collection of books. Nathan built this
little library for me. Uh, it's
something I'd always wanted to do above
doorways I think is is pretty cool. Uh,
we collected some vintage books and then
other books we brought with us, books on
food, wine, decor. So, it's an ever
growing collection of books. I always
want to to add to our collection. Uh, we
have my little quirky thing here, the
wall of dogs. So, at Bcons and Flea
Markets, I try to find antique pictures
of of dogs. And Teddy does have his own
little portrait here.
Throughout the house, uh, we've
decorated and and designed and made
things ourselves wherever we could. So,
I just took a really inexpensive white
uh uh lampshade from a like a $2 shop
and painted it in the colors left over
from from the house. And it turned out
really well, I think. Make some
interesting curtains. Uh I felt like I
had to make them myself. And cushions,
so kind of hard to find. So, throughout
the house, yeah, you'll see things that
we we've made. the fabric, a lot of it's
vintage from from op shops and and uh
people's uh garage sales. This hallway
led to four bedrooms. Every bedroom had
its own wallpaper, its own colors. It
was kind of all over the shop. So, we
decided to rip off all the wallpaper,
clean the ceilings that were covered in
a thick mold, black mold, um throw open
the windows, dry everything out, and
start from scratch. And we've created
three bedrooms now. the blue room, the
pink room, and the green room. And we've
created a really big bathroom from the
green room. And each of these rooms has
its own bathroom now as well. This is
the blue room, Shan Blur. And I think
it's the most cheerful and bright and
happy room for me. I love the colors.
So, the rooms are pretty, but we think
it's enough space for people to be
comfortable. Everyone has their own
bathroom, the shower and toilet and
sink, some storage space, and it's just
a really, I think, cheerful and lovely
place to stay with us.
So this fantastic headboard I made with
the help of a poster a friend in our old
village of Luc Lec and we've created
three different ones but I think this
one's my favorite. It's very cheerful.
Uh and then Nathan and I collected all
the other pieces from vintage shops and
broants and he made the lights for me.
Uh which is an pretty easy thing to do.
H and we have a beautiful view out the
window. All the bedrooms have views of
the vines.
This is the pink room shamro which is
very sweet. I think it's very calm and
soothing. Still very pretty and
colorful. Uh but also a very sweet sweet
room.
He was in our old house and we brought
him here with us. This room has kind of
almost ended up being the animal room
with the rabbit, the ducks behind you,
some more birds over there. Wasn't
planned, but it just happened.
And this is the last bedroom, the green
room. Share. This is where we put a hole
in the wall and opened up this bedroom
into a a big bathroom. And we shifted
the wall maybe half a meter this way to
create kind of a suite. Um
the big bathroom, the bathtub using
antique and new pieces again in that
kind of combination of old and new.
[Music]
Wonder.

This is another room where there's lots
of pieces that we've collected over the
years from um different charity shops
and amuse here in France.
Um bants uh but then also making
lampshades and and this little bench
over here. Uh the bed head again. But
everything together kind of creates the
the the homeliness that that we were
looking for. And yeah, really eclectic.
I think
it's from 1910. And then cleaning it up,
it came out just beautifully.

It's so nice cooking like this in
summer. Just very, very fresh
ingredients, very simply prepared.

[Music]
Yes, please.
>> Such a good idea.
[Music]
>> Come on, baby.
>> I have it.

And you're
[Music]
>> special.
Oh, and I'm going
[Music]
With our our first house, we had some
criteria of things we wanted and you
know, I wanted to be in a village and I
wanted a cove and we wanted to be a
certain proximity to bone and um at the
time it just didn't fall into our budget
and what we were wanting to do And um
but this house in particular um being a
Mason vineyardon, there's two beautiful
um
>> yeah kind of vaulted arched cos which um
is really special for us. We've been
able to keep one of them for wine
storage and the other we've set up to do
digestations and tastings and we'd like
to host some little private dinners down
there and um yeah, it just gives us a
lot of potential and and it gives the
the house a real character and and charm
and it has the the wine cos that I've
always
[Music]
We seem to be have the best of both
worlds here. That, you know, if we go 5
minutes to the west, we're right back in
that very rural country, rolling hills
and farmland. But if we go five minutes
to the east, we're in the Mange and into
D Santine and some of the most beautiful
wines of the region and beautiful areas
of of Burgundy. So we we feel like we've
we've kind of hit the jackpot with this
particular village cuz we really are we
we do have the best of both worlds.
>> You can see vines from every window and
that's really exciting for us because
with our love of all things wine and
food. Uh, but I think it's the perfect
village and the perfect house for us.
[Music]
Go, Bridget. Go
Audrey.
