Our DeWalt® DCST922P1 14” cordless string trimmer came with the DW01DT995 QuickLoad™ string trimmer bump head installed. Here’s how to quickly reload it and keep it in good shape!

Each season, it takes a moment to remember how to load the QuickLoad™ the bump-feed trimmer head with 0.080” (2.0 mm) trimmer string, but it is intuitive and there are marks on the head to give me clues of what to do. In no time at all, I’m a pro again and can reload the head in a minute.

To keep reloads speedy and convenient, keep 20’ (6 m) precut coils of the trimmer string ready to go.

Let’s get to it! The steps to reload the head are:

1. Remove the battery to eliminate the possibility of starting the trimmer.
2. Make a 20' (6m) coil of 0.080" (2.0 mm) trimmer line or better, use the one you have on hand.
3. Align the metal housing eyelets with the arrows on the spool grip cover.
4. Thread one end of the trimmer line through an eyelet. Push the line through to and out the second eyelet.
5. Pull the line through the spool until there are equal lengths of string on each side of the spool housing.
6. Grab and hold the spool cap with one hand. With your other hand, wind the string onto the spool by rotating the spool grip cover counterclockwise. Continue winding until 5" (130 mm) of string remains on each side of the spool housing.

If there is a short section of string in the head, or an obstruction needs to be cleared, the tabs on the side of the spool cap can be depressed and the head disassembled, cleared and reassembled. Then a fresh line can be installed.

We use a light spray of WD-40 or spray lubricant in the interior of the head just to keep things running smoothly.
