COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) impacts the breathing of nearly 16 million Americans, according to the NIH. And many more have the disease without even knowing it.

“As those elastic fibers [in the lungs] tend to be destroyed over time, you lose that ability to have that air come out,” says pulmonologist Dr. Roger Seheult, outlining how COPD restricts breathing.

Pulmonologists treat diseases of the respiratory system, including the lungs and the airways.

“Anything that you breathe in that tends to damage those elastic fibers is going to cause your lungs not to deflate, not to come back to a regular size,” he adds, listing pollutants such as cigarette smoke that can cause the disease.

How is COPD detected? Under what conditions can cooking lead to COPD? What effects can vaping and smoking marijuana have on the lungs and breathing?

Dr. Seheult returns to Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon to explain why COPD is the world’s third leading cause of death, and to highlight the respiratory dangers now facing young people in particular.

“I was actually seeing … teenage kids from local high schools ending up in my intensive care unit on ventilators because they were vaping these oils that were never really designed to be vaped.”

Dr. Seheult is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California. Alongside pulmonology, he is also board certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine.
