Bonnat and Sargent Story
Aug 17, 2025
Bonnat first studied in Spain under the elder Madrazo, and afterwards came to Paris and entered the studio of Leon Cogniet, who was a wonderful teacher, though himself only a second-class painter. In 1857, Bonnat exhibited his first portraits, but they attracted little or no attention. Then he executed some figures of Italian women and children that struck the eye of the critics by the strength and boldness of their technique, and by the perfection of their drawing. John Singer Sargent took full advantage of Bonnat's teaching of drawing.
