We all know that Elon Musk is deeply passionate about the dream of reaching Mars. In a recent interview, when asked, “Why Mars? Shouldn’t we be focusing on Earth?” Elon gave a very clear answer.
It’s defense. If something catastrophic were to happen to Earth, whether it's another world war or an asteroid like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, our entire civilization could be lost.
But reaching a distant world like Mars, which at its closest is still about 54.6 million kilometers away from Earth, is an enormous challenge if we don’t prepare in advance. Especially when the goal isn’t just to set foot on Mars, but to actually live there, to build and grow a human community on the Red Planet.

To tackle this challenge, the Moon presents the most obvious solution. It’s only about 363,300 kilometers away, and takes just three days to reach lunar orbit.
What’s even more surprising? Surviving on the Moon is actually tougher than on Mars. So if we can figure out how to live on the Moon… then living on Mars becomes a real possibility.
“anyway we should have a moon base alpha which is the next step after the Apollo program would be to have a base on the moon”.
That was Musk sharing his straightforward vision, a plan he calls Moon Base Alpha.
Well, it’s hands down one of SpaceX’s boldest ideas, first teased by Elon Musk all the way back in 2017. The vision? A permanent home for humans on the Moon.
