Penny in the Rainy Sky
Penny the pigeon lived in a tiny cozy nest at the top of a quiet building.
Her feathers were soft gray with white patches, and she always wore her favorite little blue scarf.
The sky was cloudy, but Penny didn't mind.
I'm ready for an adventure today, she chirped, stretching her wings.
She looked out at the rooftops in the wide open sky.
Just a quick fly around, then I'll be back for a cozy nap, she promised.
Penny flapped her wings gently and lifted off into the sky.
The wind was soft at first, and she glided past chimneys and fluttering curtains.
Below her, tiny people in toy-sized cars moved slowly.
Penny fell free and brave, but suddenly a raindrop landed on her beak.
Then another, and another.
Oh no! Rain, she chirped.
The clouds grew darker, and the wind pushed her little wings harder than before.
Penny flapped harder as the rain grew heavier.
The streets below looked wet and shiny, and the clouds above her turned a deep gray.
She spotted a small open window near the roof of a tall building.
Maybe I can rest there, she thought.
And glided toward it.
But as she got closer, loud music burst out.
Penny flinched midair and quickly turned away.
Too noisy, she whispered.
Her tiny wings soaked now.
She needed somewhere quiet and dry.
Penny flew on, her feathers now dripping wet.
Then, just ahead, she saw a wide slanted roof with a big wooden sign.
Library.
The tiles looked dry under the roof's edge.
She landed carefully and shook off the raindrops.
It was quiet here.
Just the sound of soft rain on the roof and pages turning inside the building.
Penny let out a yawn.
This is nice, she thought, curling her wings.
But it still didn't feel like home.
Penny let out a long, squeaky yawn.
The rain was softer now, and the roof tiles were warm.
She curled her wings around herself and rested her head.
But something was missing.
The smell of her nest.
The soft sound of the wind above her building.
Her mom's gentle coo.
Penny blinked sleepily.
Maybe, maybe home is better than adventure, she whispered.
With a final flap, she lifted off.
Flying back toward the place she loved most.
Penny landed softly, back on the edge of her own rooftop.
The rain had stopped, and the clouds were clearing.
Her little nest looked just like she remembered.
Warm, dry, and safe.
She nestled inside, tucked her wings in, and let out a deep, happy sigh.
Her mama cooed softly beside her.
Penny yawned, curled up in her cottony nest, and closed her eyes.
This, this was just right.
She was home.
And now, Little Dreamers.
