Once upon a time, in a wide, sunny meadow, wildflowers swayed and butterflies danced.
Here lived a little ant. Small, yes, but with the heart of a lion and the determination of a hundred.
Every morning, she marched out to gather food, seeds, crumbs, dried berries.
Winter is coming. I must be ready.
Not far from her hill, in a patch of tall grass, lived a grasshopper.
He was tall and green, his wings shiny, his long legs made for jumping.
He carried a polished twig violin and wore a blade of grass tied like a sash.
Every day, he played cheerful tunes and sang silly songs,
making the beetles laugh and the dragonflies dance.
The forest rang with his music.
One morning, the grasshopper spotted the little ant hard at work.
He leapt over to her and played a playful tune.
Why do you work so hard, little ant?
The sun is warm. The meadow is bright.
Come dance. Come sing.
Life is too short for work all day.
There will be time to dance later, friend.
But not now. The warm days won't last forever.
The grasshopper shrugged and bounced away, his music echoing across the field.
Summer slowly faded. The flowers wilted.
The breeze grew colder. The sky darkened sooner each evening.
Winter is still far away. There's time.
But then, one morning, the grasshopper woke to find frost on the grass.
The trees were bare.
The wind howled through the meadow.
Snowflakes drifted from the sky like feathers.
Winter had come, swift and strong.
The grasshopper shivered. He had no food.
His wings were too cold to fly. His violin was silent.
Everywhere he hopped, he found nothing but ice and silence.
The once happy meadow was now a frozen world.
With aching legs and an empty belly, the grasshopper stumbled through the snow.
Until he saw a faint light glowing beneath a daisy.
He crept closer and knocked.
From inside, warm scents drifted out.
Soft light flickered, and sweet laughter could be heard.
The door creaked open.
The ant stood there, surprised, wrapped in thistle fluff.
Grasshopper?
I'm cold and hungry. I have nowhere to go. May I stay?
The ant looked at him, a long moment of thought.
Then she stepped aside.
Come in, warm yourself.
I didn't listen to you. I wasted the summer. You were right.
And yet here you are, learning from it. That matters more.
For the rest of the winter, they shared meals, stories, and songs.
This year, I will work with you.
And I shall take breaks and dance.
Their hill was full of warmth, laughter, and music, season after season.
