Lotte Schöne is considered one of the great German-speaking opera singers of the first half of the twentieth century. She celebrated her greatest triumphs in the period after the First World War until the Nazis came to power. During this period, Lotte Schöne sang mainly in Vienna and Berlin, but also at the Salzburg Festival and in numerous guest performances abroad.
Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (D 965), for voice, clarinet and piano, is Franz Schubert's penultimate composition, written in October/November 1828, based on two poems by Wilhelm Müller and one poem by Karl August Varnhagen von Ense.
Lyric:
When I stand on the highest rock,
Looking down into the deep valley,
And sing.
Far away from the deep, dark valley,
The echo swings up
From the ravines.
The further my voice travels,
The clearer it sounds to me
From below.
My beloved lives so far away from me,
That is why I long so ardently for her
Across the distance.
