Franz Peter Schubert was a composer of the late Classical and early Romantic periods. During his short life, he produced a vast body of work, including more than 600 vocal pieces (mostly lieder), as well as several symphonies, operas and a substantial amount of piano music. His talent was evident from a young age, but his music was not widely appreciated during his lifetime. His work grew in popularity in the decades following his death and was celebrated by 19^(th)-century composers such as Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms and Liszt.

I stood in dark dreams,
gazing at her picture,
and that beloved face
began mysteriously to come alive.

Around her lips played
a wondrous smile,
and her eyes glistened,
as though with melancholy tears.

My tears, too, flowed
down my cheeks.
And oh – I cannot believe
that I have lost you!
