So, I made a big mistake.
♪ I still remember ♪
Okay, it's not a huge mistake,
but I missed the kindergarten cutoff.
We were supposed to register Jude,
I think it was like two weeks ago.
I knew about it.
Okay, it's not that I didn't know about it,
it's just that we were supposed to decide
if we wanted to send her or not, or hold her back a year.
We didn't, we didn't decide.
We've been months and months talking about,
do we send her, do we keep her home, what do we do?
And I don't think we're any closer to an actual decision.
So, I wanna know, please tell me,
what's your experience with kids in kindergarten?
Did you red shirt them, hold them back a year?
If so, why?
Like, what do you think?
Do you regret it?
Are you glad you did?
If you did not, if you went ahead
and pushed them through to kindergarten at five,
how do you feel about that?
Did they adjust okay?
With Tyler and Elena, we didn't really have a hard decision
because Tyler was so ready.
She loved preschool, she loved school, she was ready,
she wanted to ride the bus, real bad,
but she loves being around people all day.
She's very extroverted.
So, she's really thrived in that sense.
With Elena, she's very book smart.
The girl could read before she even started kindergarten.
She thrives on a schedule,
having tasks to complete in schoolwork.
Like, she just really loves to be good at things.
So, for her, kindergarten was like, yes.
Like, she's seriously, after the first week of adjusting,
she's thrived so much, so much.
I can't even explain the difference
between preschool and kindergarten.
So, that was an easy, easy decision.
With Jude, she marches to the beat of her own drum.
She's a smart kid, but she's definitely like,
the street smart, common sense kind of kid,
not like, the book smart.
That doesn't interest her.
Like, she is not interested in learning that much.
Like, she is, and she's not.
It's hard to explain, but she's not like,
I wanna know the right way to do things,
I wanna know how to spell things,
I wanna know how to read.
She really doesn't care.
She really just cares about playing and having fun,
and I think that's them home now.
So, it's time to probably ask Jude.
Our biggest problem is that kindergarten is so long.
Like, eight hours a day for kindergartners.
When I went to kindergarten, it was four hours.
Honestly, I think John and I both agree,
or would agree, that eight hours is too long
for any kid to be in school,
especially in elementary school.
They should be playing, right, Jude?
Hey, I got a question for you.
What is that?
It's only just chocolate.
I got some from school.
Oh, cool.
You're so cute.
Hi, Addy, how was school?
And I love Ms. Kim's class, so.
Addy, come here, let me show you something.
Did your teachers like your haircut?
So, I think for us, for her, it's just hard.
It's hard to picture her in school, dude.
It's so hard.
It's so hard to decide.
Let me know what you guys think, like,
because we really do have to decide soon.
We need to go ahead and get her registered
and make plans, whether it's for transitional kindergarten,
which we have to pay registration and hold her spot,
or regular kindergarten.
So, I was talking to everyone about kindergarten,
because, did you know you're gonna be five next week?
Like, it's your birthday.
I know, but I still be in my preschool.
You do?
So you, okay, but not next week.
You don't have to go next week,
but in the fall, like, after summer break,
like, after Tyler turns eight, do you,
I know, she's gonna be eight.
Do you wanna go to kindergarten next year,
or do you wanna go stay at your school with Ms. Kathy?
I wanna go to the new teacher in my school.
You don't wanna go to kindergarten?
Like, with Tyler and Elena?
Oh, yeah, I wanna go with my sister.
So, she's not super helpful.
Okay, why do you wanna go to kindergarten?
Because I want to, like,
be with my sisters and hug them every day.
Well, you could ride the bus with them,
but you wouldn't be in the same class as them.
You'd be in a different class.
But I still get to, like, ride the school bus with them?
Mm-hmm, but then that means you wouldn't be home right now.
You wouldn't come home until they come home.
Do you wanna go to school for longer?
Like, a long day at school?
I wanna go to school for a long time.
You do?
Do you wanna learn more things?
Do you think you're ready for that, to learn how to read?
You wanna learn how to read and write?
And ride the bus?
Oh, it kind of makes me sad.
Why, why?
So, you think you're ready for kindergarten?
Yeah.
Okay.
All right, so you think we should go register you
for kindergarten?
Get you signed up?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You don't wanna go to preschool next year?
You wanna go to kindergarten for eight hours?
I wanna go for 10 hours.
All right, you guys.
Well, I guess we could always try it,
and then if you really aren't doing well,
we could take you back out.
Okay.
Okay, you don't care.
She doesn't care.
Well, there you have it, people.
I don't think we're still any closer to a decision.
Anyway, I wanna decide what's best for her.
So, throw your stories at me.
Let me know what you guys think, regret, don't regret.
That way we can decide.
You probably won't kill us
if it takes us a little longer, right?
Oh, what?
I didn't even know you were recording.
Yeah, it'll be all right.
Should be all right.
That's John's mentality.
I'm like the overthinker, and he's like the,
just dive in, don't worry about it.
We'll be all right.
