The lotus flower is a symbol of holiness and beauty in Chinese culture.
It grows up through the mud and dirt,eventually opening as a beautiful pure flower above the surface of the water, with no trace of mud.

The lotus is also a symbol of purity in Buddhism - showing that no matter how bad your environment is, you can remain pure.
That's a wonderful thing to teach children.
