Selena Gomez Talks New Music, 13 Reasons Why, Scary Stories & More

1-0-4-3, my fam, it is Valentine in the morning. Ladies and gentlemen, Selena Gomez in the studio. Congratulations. Thank you. How do you feel? I feel all the feels, I guess. It's actually really, it's a good sense of relief. Uh-huh. I've been working on music for so long, and having the opportunity to sit down and say, what do I want to say? And having the freedom to do that has been really rewarding. Yeah. So, I wrote this song over a year ago. Okay. And it's wild to see how I feel now, and it's in a weird way. Oh, sure. Emotions change, people change. You grow as a person. We're all growing every single day, so obviously there's growth from that. It's a new experience for me. Do you look back at anything in the song now and go, I wish I wanted to change that, or I should have left it the way it was? Or is there anything in the song that you're like, it's all just perfect, is it? It's not that it's perfect, it's just my truth. Yeah. I don't really think anything is perfect, especially on my end. I acknowledge my mistakes, and I acknowledge things that I've said and done. But with this, no, it's just exactly my story and my truth. And I have every right to speak it. Would you say the song sort of signifies a new chapter? Mm-hmm. Is it weird then to think that you'll be performing this song every night for the next 10 years, and bring up old memories or wounds or anything? You don't really think of it that way. Because this is an anthem for me. And it's actually so powerful, just for me, regardless of what people think. And that's the beauty of it. Do you find strength then when you perform the song? You haven't performed it yet, obviously, it just dropped. So when you perform the song, will you find strength, you think, that you go out on stage and you're like, man, I want to sing this song, and I get electric inside my body when I sing this song? Yeah. I do. Yeah? I think that's the best part. I've obviously done collaborations throughout the years, but this is mine. This is my stuff and my music. And it was just a great way to start the whole album. Because it's just me tying up this chapter in my life in the best way I possibly could. And now it's just going to get better from here. Good for you. That's awesome. And the response to the song, so many people saying, I relate to this, I relate to this part, relating to the song just in general. Hearing you put these words out there and resonating with somebody helps in a way that you don't even think it would, just knowing somebody else has gone through something like this. I hope so. That's the feeling. That's actually the point of what I do. I don't want to release something that has no meaning behind it. And given my position, I'm always going to just want to share everything as honest as I possibly can, because I'm not the only one feeling these things. It's impossible. I'm not the only one that has felt it, and I don't know if I'll feel it again sometime in life. So that's the best part, is being able to relate to everybody. So we've been playing it now for a couple of days. But if you wanted to kind of sum it up for somebody that's just coming to the song right now, and obviously let the lyrics speak for themselves, what would you say to them? Here's my song, here's what it means to me. Well, I'd say, yes, I'd say that this is what I felt and this is what I was going through. And it's just a song about release and just trusting where you're going to be and where you're going to go in a peaceful way. Not freak out and say, oh, this is it. I'm never going to have this again, and I'm miserable. It's more just, I get it, and I went through it, and now it's done. And now you're out the other side. I'm a sucker for piano. He always says he's going to go home and learn how to play the songs. He never does, but that's always the intention. It's just a feeling. That's what he said the first time he heard yours. But doesn't it create a feeling when you hear just a voice and a piano right next to each other like that? I love hearing that. So great job with that. Thank you. I'm a sucker for piano love songs, I mean, forever. It's so cool to actually have one of my own, and it feels like an anthem. But yeah, I learned how to play, well, I played the entire song on piano when I first wrote it with Justin and Julia. And then when we added production, it was just more minimum. We wanted it to kind of have a feeling where it would go somewhere. But in my opinion, it sounds the best when it's just piano. Well, sometimes I think if you put too many instruments on there, and I'm not a songwriter, maybe I can speak to it. You put too much on there, it takes away from the message, it takes away from the vocalist because two of the greatest instruments in the world are the piano and the human voice. That's beautiful. And you want to hear them. Yes, it's true. It's very true. It's actually very true. I would love to, when I hear my favorite artists, and they release a song, I'm always like, I just want to hear the acoustic version of that song, even if it doesn't exist, because I can tell that that's, I don't know, that's just real, that's raw. When you strip it down, you can hear, even in the nuances of somebody's voice cracking or whatever, when you strip something down to its raw reality, sometimes that's when the true emotion comes through. And the video, like, the song is powerful on its own, and then you watch your video, and you see you singing those words, and that is super powerful. Like, I was brought to tears watching it for the first time. Thank you. It's just so moving. Thank you so much. So good. It was fun. That was a weird, that was a weird video shoot, but it was really fun, because I was allowed to just express every emotion, so I look kind of crazy in it, but it's all the things that I'd felt, so it was fun. And so I had the pleasure of, like, getting to know her. Her music saved me in a lot of ways. Rescue Me? Yes. Yeah. That was the song. That's something, isn't it? That got me through a lot. Yeah. Amen to that. Are you surrounding yourself with some of the best people in the world right now? You've got great friends around you. Yeah, I do. I have some with me out there. Yeah. I mean, that's everything. I just want to live life with good people. Yeah. And it gets, you know, smaller and smaller, the group that you have, but it just ends up being more me. But it gets stronger, right? 100%. Yeah. All of my friends I've known for over 10 years. Oh, that's great. So it's just the best feeling to know that that's my family when I need it. That's so cool. And Shark Tank. I had no idea that you were so obsessed until you posted the video. It was your birthday present, right? Yes. And so you went? Did you go to a taping yet? I'm such a loser. No. No, we love Shark Tank, man. It was just, it was such a cool experience. I thought I'd only go for like an hour. But everybody just, you know, made it super comfortable. And I ended up staying the whole day. I'm picturing the set. Where do you sit? So I actually got to sit right behind the cameras. Okay. So we got to see the action right there. And it was so uncomfortable sometimes. I'm like, oh, gosh. You know, with all of the questions and everything. You just want to shout out, I'll give you money. I know. I'm like, I'm sorry. It's a really good idea. I'll invest. Like, it's so good. Do you have an idea or some type of invention or anything that you could pitch to those sharks? You know what? I think I'm just going to stick in my lane. That's smart. That's funny. I have no idea. It's the weirdest thing. There's a patent pending on a new toothbrush. I know, right? There have been so many times that we thought of Shark Tank ideas and here we go, Shark Tank. Then we go, no, we have no idea what we're talking about. No, but then you see it on the show. I had an idea years ago for a doorbell that, you know, you put on the front door and it would videotape people in front of the. Ring. No, I never had that idea. Oh, my gosh. So, it's just like every episode is a different short story. 21 minutes, 21 minutes. Basically. And it starts with two sentences. Oh, wow. Oh, my gosh. That's awesome. There's two more. All right, all right, all right. Because you're doing great. I'm loving this. I want to circle back to Netflix, though. Yeah, of course, of course. All right. I woke up to hearing knocking on the glass. At first, I thought it was the window until I heard it come from the mirror again. Oh, my God. These are scary. These are stupid. No, these are super scary. I'm, like, scared and the sun is up. I'm very scared. If you think those are stupid, don't even bother with the fourth one. It's so dumb. No, the fourth one has to happen. I peeked outside. The pizza delivery guy is at the door. But I didn't order a pizza. And definitely not from someone wearing a pig mask. What? Oh, my God. You were right. I'm impressed he delivered it, though. He got through it. Definitely not from somebody wearing a pig mask. That's actually probably, you could do that. You could probably do that. That would be a real scary story, believe it or not. Well, that went better than we expected. That was a lot of fun. Thank you for doing this. Thank you. No, it went great. That's going to be all over the Internet. People will love that. What was your Netflix question? Well, congratulations on the documentary series, The Living Undocumented, that you did. Thank you. That's very important and very heavy subject matter. And the last time you were here, actually, we talked to you about 13 Reasons Why. And it was a recent news story that Netflix decided to take out the scene from the first season. I want to know how you felt about that, because I feel like that's a little contentious. I mean, I definitely have my own opinions. So, I understand the situation, of course. And I never want to disrespect someone. And I never want to hurt someone intentionally. So, that was definitely more of a surprise to me than anything else. So, I stand by what I was able to do with the show. But I understand. It's just a really sensitive time. I respect that. For sure. I get what you're saying. Maybe I can be a little less politically correct with the answer. But I feel like that's a vital scene. And it should be in there. But that's just me. No, I understand. I mean, look. When you're creating film or you're sharing something that emotional and that intense, it exists. I mean, we're not the first to have done it. But I guess when I'm attached to something, there's a little bit of that. Some more publicity and stuff. People talking about it. And I have to be aware of it. And I told you this last time, too. And I know you can understand. You're a very intelligent woman. I still haven't watched it. That's fine. And it's just because I have an 11-year-old son. And I probably should watch it. I know I should watch it. But I'm struggling with it myself in certain respects. There's been depression in my family and everything. And so, it's a hard thing for parents. Of course. Very hard thing. It is. But I appreciate all the work that you put into that. Well, that's the part that people discuss. Yeah. Some parents came up to me and said how it opened up this whole conversation. For sure. Even parents at schools. Yeah. And there's that side of it. And then there's the side where people had very harsh words to share with me. But that's life. Oh, I have no harsh words. I'm glad you did it. No, I know. I don't want to say that's the point. But that's why we share it. Yeah. It's happening. I have a six-year-old sister. And I'm terrified. She's in school already seeing and learning things that she shouldn't. Right. And I'd rather be honest with her. I'd rather just talk about it all. Because that's what my mom did with me. Yeah. And I appreciate it. Well, getting kids to talk about stuff at an earlier age is always important. Because, you know, I'm going back and forth with Colin, my 11-year-old. And I want him to always come to me. And sometimes he'll come to me like five days after an incident. Like, buddy, you should have told me then. I could have helped out with that. But kids, sometimes they just don't want to share. So opening up to conversation as much as you can with parents and kids, I mean, that does a world of good. That's all I want. And also to have a voice. Yeah. People who are afraid of saying that. Yeah. Because I end up having incredible conversations with fans. And they've never shared something that was on their heart. And that's important. I think that's such a stigma. That it's not cool you're weak or you're something for sharing your heart. No, not at all. It's the biggest release in any part of your story. Yeah. We talk about it. Jill goes to therapy. I go to therapy. Same. Not because of all of us in the studio. But we've all talked about our therapy on the air. And it's cathartic. It helps out, you know? Yeah. There are days, too, when you're thinking, like, right before your appointment, you're like, what am I going to talk about today? And then you think, this is good. I'm making progress. Oh, that's great when you don't have anything to talk about. I don't have anything to talk about today. With her. Yeah. There's always something. Now, I've gone in before and I've made stuff up because I felt kind of bad. No, you didn't. Well, not, like, made up, made up. I'm like, I'm struggling. I think I'm doing okay today.
