After a little boy hacked off his sister's hair, a stylist's creative transformation saved the day.
Mom-of-two Brianna Naylor heads upstairs, suspicious that her two children,
Colt and Kimber, aren't making any noise. Alas, she walks into a disaster zone.
Colt's got his hands on a pair of scissors and snipped off all of Kimber's hair.
Brianna's only option is to call in somebody with the expertise to save the day.
Her hairdresser friend, Jen Bullock.
The Naylor family live in Queens Creek, Arizona, on the outskirts of the Santan Mountain Regional
Park. The town is noted for having a strong sense of community spirit, and that friendliness came
to the forefront when Brianna sought out her neighbor, Jen, to assist with the crisis her
little boy had created. Jen, originally from Ohio, works for the organic hair care company
All Nutrient. She's a member of their design crew, in fact. On its official company Facebook page,
All Nutrient advertises itself as having,
"...set the standard for delivering the finest and naturally derived products in the beauty industry."
Jen also has a social media channel named Generally Speaking Hair, and on her YouTube
account, she posts videos about the finer points of caring for your tresses. So, it's safe to say,
she is exactly the sort of person you'd want to have the phone number of
after discovering your daughter's hair scattered all over the floor.
Moreover, Jen absolutely loves her career. In April 2019, the hairdresser wrote happily on
her Instagram account, "...I'm so thankful to be in a position to meet so many amazing people
and be on a journey with like-minded, positive, loving, optimistic seekers of the good,
simple things in life." Take a quick glance at the account,
and you can tell Jen is extremely good at hair transformations. She often posts before and after
pictures of her clients, for example. When you listen to the hair and cut it right,
curly hair can be short, too, she wrote in February 2017. Wow, what a difference!
That inner glow is able to be seen.
Jen works to highlight people's best features, carefully styling their hair.
What happens when Thirsty Thursday has you thirsty for change?
To use this beautiful smile as the inspiration and make the hair point right to it,
she explained in May 2018, and her clients expressed their sincere approval in the
comments section. Jen also works to transform the hair of children and teens.
One hour of being in the chair, she went from baby girl to young lady,
Jen wrote of a client in February 2017. How does cutting over a foot of hair off do that?
And the Naylor family would soon witness one of her creations up close.
Brianna spoke to the Daily Mirror in October 2019 about discovering what her son had done.
She and her husband Michael, a demolition worker, noticed their children were playing
in Brianna's wardrobe. However, the kids were also strangely quiet, and any parent
can tell you that's a warning sign they're probably up to something.
Moms and dads simply can't watch their children all the time, of course,
no matter how good they are at child-rearing. And while kids love to play games with their
parents, siblings will naturally play with each other too. That's a good thing. Play is
one way in which a child learns to interact with the world around them.
When your children are playing together well, reinforcing the idea that it's a good thing can
help encourage similar behavior in the future, the website Early Childhood Education advises.
If you notice your children playing happily together of their own accord,
then make sure that you compliment them on their game and let them know how good it is
that they're playing well together.
However, although Colt and Kimber were being quiet and not fighting,
every parent's dream, Colt's behavior wasn't exactly ideal. He'd found some scissors,
in fact, and used them to cut off most of his younger sister's hair. Brianna's wardrobe was
now covered in the stuff, and some of her dresses had been snipped as well.
Generally, children and scissors aren't a good mix if left unsupervised. However,
allowing a two or three-year-old to use safety scissors to cut paper is actually a good thing.
Though some parents may flinch at the idea of letting their kids near something sharp,
using scissors can help improve a child's motor skills.
In addition, seeing as how most people will use scissors at some point throughout their lives,
it's a good idea to get children used to them early. Manufacturers these days have invented
scissors specifically for children to use, of course, and some of them are intended to
Alas, this was not the case with the scissors Colt used.
This is far from unheard of with younger siblings. Sometimes they'll simply follow directions from
an older brother or sister with no objections. According to Dr. Pamela Verity, who spoke to
Parents Canada in 2019, younger kids in a family want to look like older siblings,
act like them, and mostly want their approval. Occasionally, however, this can lead to
difficulties. Dr. Verity explained to Parents Canada that children of a young age don't
understand what's going on around them the way an older sibling might. As a result, they look to
them for guidance. But a slightly older child may not be the best teacher for a young sibling.
Although Dr. Verity observed that older siblings can be taught to not let their brothers or
sisters do certain things that they do, younger children find it hard to realize why you shouldn't
let older kids be the boss. Some are getting more attention from siblings than even their parents,
so siblings become vital to them for their sense of self.
Thankfully, Brianna and her husband were quick to swoop in and correct Colt's behavior.
We explained that we don't play with scissors, and you could tell Colt felt bad. Brianna explained
to the Mirror, we had him vacuum up the hair that he cut off, and this is a good move when it comes
to misbehaving kids. Whenever a young child does something wrong, it's appropriate to make them
calmly face the consequences and encourage them to make amends for it, such as by asking them to
help clean up the mess they made. This helps the child understand they're the only person in control
of their actions. I'd also found the dresses that had been hidden behind them had rips in them,
Brianna told the Mirror. Not only had he been hacking away at Kimber's hair, but he'd been
destroying my dresses. I had to put one of them in the bin. I think he's learned his lesson,
he won't be doing it again. When I saw them, I was shocked,
but I thought it was funny, Brianna added. I started laughing. My husband came in, and he
was a little angry at first, until he found the humor in it too. He was upset at first that his
little girl's hair was now all scattered all over the floor. Colt had definitely had a good hack
away at her hair, but Jen came to the rescue, the mom continued. In fact, Brianna had already talked
to Jen that same day. She'd wanted to get her own hair done, but as is often the case when children
are involved, her own plans had to take a sudden backseat. The Nailers were fortunate to have a
talented hairstylist so close by. Brianna recalled, I messaged her to say, forget about doing my hair,
I need you to do Kimber, help. She said she'd be right over.
Jen saved the day. We discussed some options and looked at some pictures on the internet.
Jen was also interviewed by the Mirror. My first thought was be calm and make
lemonade out of lemons, she admitted. I said, okay, we're gonna make this cute.
We're gonna make sure she still looks like a girl. I'm gonna figure out what I'm gonna do
with those hard lines and we're gonna make lemonade out of this. Once I went over there
and looked at it, it seemed like the only way we could embrace this with lemonade was if we
embrace the lines, straighten them out and added a few more, Jen continued. I wasn't sure if Brianna
would be on board with it, so I nervously asked. But they were completely on board and completely
joyed that this disaster could actually end up in a fun little result. Jen's a parent herself too.
I'm married to my high school sweetheart and we're on our 25th year together.
She posted on her Instagram in August 2019. We have three kids, two boys and a girl,
ages 22, 17, 15, and they're cooler than us, of course. So it's probably safe to say
she's seen her share of disasters too. It sure seemed that the entire energy about
the situation was completely elevated at that moment, the hairdresser recalled.
I got the clippers out, had fun with that right side, created a cute shape to her full cut,
and the rest was history. As a result, Kimber now had a fantastically stylish hairdo.
In fact, Kimber looks so cute that her mother was a tiny bit envious.
It turned out great, Brianna told the Mirror. I love the new haircut. I'm a little jealous and
I wish I got to rock something that rad looking. Kimber's very happy and so am I.
Even my husband loves it. Now, he thinks it's adorable.
Brianna also spoke to the website mom.com in September 2019
about her daughter's hair-raising experience.
I'm not sure if Kimber realizes how rad she really looks, Brianna said.
It's as though her hair matches her spunky personality now,
or maybe she's more spunky because of her rad hair.
The mom added that her children often did typical toddler things such as jumping off furniture.
However, following the hair incident, Brianna reported that there hadn't been any other
heart-attack-inducing behaviors, and both kids have been forbidden from using scissors,
again without a parent.
What's more, the story went viral after Jen posted it on her Facebook page.
House call, she wrote.
Big brother decided to be a barber on his little sis,
so I decided to be an artist and help sista out.
And Jen tagged the message with, among other things,
we've all been there and kids do the darndest things.
And people definitely seem to approve of Jen's work.
Indeed, the post racked up in excess of 20,000 comments and close to 90,000 shares.
And the compliments flowed.
Some people had scissor stories of their own as well.
That's a great haircut and what a save, one wrote.
I had to shave my youngest girl, cause her sister cut her hair so bad.
It seems that Jen's been training for a long time to give a haircut so successful it goes viral.
In 2018, she was interviewed for the All Nutrient blog
and said she'd been fascinated by hair since the age of 19.
Everyone in my family has this eye for color, she explained.
My father and grandfather both work as colorists and printing,
and my grandmother's a seamstress.
And by the time Jen was just 12 years old,
she'd begun cutting the hair of her family and friends.
It's funny to think back now as an adult,
because I would never let my friend's 12-year-old daughter cut my hair, she admitted.
Jen persevered and started to learn how to do makeup as well.
However, despite studying cosmetology at school,
Jen didn't think she'd ever be able to pursue a career in hairstyling.
I didn't want to not like doing hair because I love doing hair, she explained,
but I thought that maybe it was more of a hobby
and at the time didn't fit that white-collar job description.
As a result, Jen decided to study dentistry instead while keeping hairstyling just as a hobby.
Once her three kids were grown up, though, she decided it was time to switch careers.
Jen signed up for a cosmetology course and began working in salons to build her skills up,
sometimes even doing jobs for free.
And it all paid off eventually.
I'm still so crazy about hair, I don't know why I didn't go into it at the beginning,
Jen told the All Nutrient blog.
I'm still on the honeymoon of it all.
It's amazing what you can do when you have a license in your hands.
I'm always thirsty for more and more education.
To me, hair is all about the balance between art and science,
because that's what we stylists do all day long, Jen added.
You can't achieve the art and have that predictability
if you don't understand the science behind it.
And that was my first fall-in-love moment with All Nutrient.
Although Jen made hairdressing look easy when she styled Kimber, it's far from the truth.
When speaking to The Mirror, Brianna said,
I'm not sure if Colt is destined to be a barber.
Every time I get the buzzer and scissors out to cut my husband's hair,
he's always begging me to let him try it.
And judging by Jen's story, that early interest could spark something,
even though he's not allowed to use scissors solo anymore.
