A father walked into a Utah courtroom expecting
to deal with a routine court appearance.
But just before he went inside, he realized he had a problem.
His two-year-old daughter couldn't go with him.
What happened next was captured by the courthouse security cameras.
It was January 27, 2016, in Orem, Utah.
Jose Moncayo had brought his daughter, Abisai, known as Abby,
to court because he didn't have anyone available to watch her.
Abby was energetic. Very energetic.
Surveillance footage shows the toddler moving around the
courthouse lobby while her father waited
for his case to be called. Sitting nearby was
Officer Kevin Norris of the Orem Police Department.
Norris was there for an entirely different
reason. He was waiting to testify in another court hearing.
Then Jose's name was called.
He tried to take Abby inside with him,
but learned that children weren't allowed in the
courtroom. Suddenly, he had no idea what to do.
That's when Officer Norris stood up and offered
a surprisingly simple solution. He would watch her.
Jose hadn't asked him. Norris simply saw a
father who needed help and stepped in.
And according to Norris, being a father himself
made the situation easy to understand.
Once Jose went inside, the security cameras
continued recording. Abby immediately seemed comfortable
with the six-foot-six police officer.
She took him by the finger,
and the unlikely pair began walking around the courthouse together.
They stopped for some water.
Other deputies gave Abby a few treats. Norris even entertained her
by taking what he described as giant steps
and baby steps as they walked. Eventually,
all that activity started catching up with her.
Norris sat down and pulled out his phone.
He found some cartoons for Abby to watch.
The little girl climbed onto his lap,
and within minutes, the energetic toddler who
had been running around the courthouse
was fast asleep in the police officer's arms.
That was the scene Jose returned
to after finishing his court appearance.
His daughter was sleeping peacefully on the lap
of a police officer he had barely known
before that day.
Jose later said he felt incredibly grateful.
He explained that he had never even asked Norris
to take care of his daughter.
The officer had simply done it.
When the Orem Police Department shared the surveillance footage online,
millions of people watched the small act of kindness.
Norris, however, didn't seem to understand why everyone
was making such a big deal about it.
To him, somebody needed help, and he happened to be there.
For a few minutes that afternoon,
Officer Kevin Norris wasn't investigating a crime or making an arrest.
He was walking around a courthouse, finding snacks, playing cartoons,
and giving one worried father a helping hand when he needed it most.
