SpaceX's Solution to Solve Fatal Flaw Destroyed Starship Flight 9!
Loss of control. Payload deployment failure.
These are the key reasons Flight 9 has made headlines. Despite clear progress over past missions, serious challenges remain—and that’s exactly when new solutions start to emerge.
So, what went wrong in Flight 9—and how will SpaceX fix it?
Let’s break it down on today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
SpaceX's Solution to Solve Fatal Flaw Destroyed Starship Flight 9!
Flight 9 concluded with several remarkable moments, and the highlight was certainly Starship's upper stage, referred to as the Ship. This part of the flight was considered the most critical in determining the mission's overall success, especially after two consecutive failures in previous attempts.
At first, things looked promising. A major challenge during liftoff was successfully overcome, offering hope for a successful mission. However, as the flight progressed, a series of issues began to unfold. These included the failure to deploy the payload, and more critically, the Ship eventually lost control.
Let us explore these problems in greater detail.
One of the most persistent issues that SpaceX has not yet been able to fully resolve is fuel leakage. Elon Musk confirmed after the flight that a leak occurred in the fuel tank, which led to a drop in pressure and an inability to deliver adequate fuel to the engines. This leak did not appear as a momentary problem; instead, it began early in the flight, well before the payload deployment phase.

The result of this leak was that one engine became underpowered just before the second engine cutoff (SECO). This led to a partial loss of control. Although the deviation was subtle at first, it became more evident when the internal camera switched to the payload bay. Frost particles were seen drifting in a single direction, which suggested that the entire Ship had begun to spin abnormally. As the situation worsened, we witnessed the clear signs of the Ship losing full control.
In a situation like this, the obvious priority is to regain control of the vehicle. Typically, the first approach would be to reignite the engines and use thrust to stabilize the rocket. However, this option was not available due to the fuel leak that had already reduced engine performance. Instead, SpaceX opted to control the vehicle using the pressure from exhaust gases.
This technique uses the natural pressure generated by heated fuel turning into gas within the tank. The expansion of this gas not only helps deliver liquid fuel to the engines, but also provides a means of steering the vehicle. However, the effectiveness of this system depends on maintaining stable internal pressure.
