Isaac
Sophia
Izzy
Marie
Izzy
The Misfits
Angel Dempsey
新職員Izzy Glenn
和導師Opal Joe Kelmar
Angel
Opal Joe
Lightning Ridge
Angel
去Lightning Ridge
Lightning Ridge
Opal & Gem Festival
Lightning Ridge Festival
Lightning Ridge
Lightning Ridge
Lightning Ridge
Ewie
Ben
Chills
Kris
Rory,Oscar
Opal
Isaac
Ben Bowen
Sophia
Ben
Dud's a bloody wizard
I mean, without him, we'd be stuffed
Luca!
I'm gonna lower this down, okay?
Yeah
It's thick wire, it's welding wire
And I'm gonna run gas with it
The gas keeps the oxygen out of it
Otherwise it gets impurities in the weld
Oscar and I always give him a bit of crap
For spending his spare change on all this gear
But when we're in a pickle, he's always got something to fix it
On! It's on, Dad!
We've got to get this job done
Because if we don't, then we can't shift any dirt
So, you know, a bit of a time factor here happening
Because we're trying to take that pillar
And we can't do that without this machine
He's pretty good on the tools, Dad
Throughout all my life, he's been able to fix literally anything
He's pretty clever, always comes up with a way
I figured while I'm here fixing the bucket
I might as well race it up and make it as strong as I can
Chris wants to weld a 1cm thick steel plate
Onto the corner of the damaged bucket
Which will repair the tear
And strengthen the join beyond its original capacity
All right, well, I reckon that's good enough, Luca
Good job, Dad
Hey, Rory!
Yo!
I reckon this is right to go, mate
There's not much left of this now
So I don't really want any more hold-ups
Once it's all gone, there's no reason to be here
And there's no reason to, you know, have ourselves
In any sort of hazardous situation
This is undercut and that's hanging up there
Just stand back
Because there's enough there to come down at once
And knock a prop out
You don't want to be under that
Obviously when we take out its support
There's a chance that it's going to drop down
We've nearly undercut it completely
So there's going to be nothing holding it up
Except where it's stuck to the roof
35 feet underground
There's a lot of weight up there
And you'll all have to stand back
You want to go first, Izzy?
Yep
I can do that
Under the instructions of mentor Opal Jo
Angel and Izzy are exploring old-timers' workings
On their open-cut mine
I hope you're not claustrophobic
Too late now
It's very, very difficult to breathe down there
But it's Opal
That's what we're there for
It's quite tight in here
But I reckon I'm just going to slide down on my belly, Angel
Probably only got a couple of feet
Just be careful
I'm right underneath where I was running the bulldozer
I've only got three, four feet of ceiling above me
Any vibration can send it down
Izzy, I found a trace already
Bit of trace there
I've just gotten into the first drive
And I've spotted trace straight away
That's even got colour, Izzy
Has it?
Yep, bit of green, bit of blues in the top corner
Anything that glows, it's going in our bucket
Look at that
Awesome, Izzy
Wow, that actually heats good
That's massive
There it goes
Caught it
Caught it?
Look at the size of it
Look at that
Angel, did you just feel that vibration?
I did
Izzy just felt a vibration from a neighbour claim
So now we're going to get out
But as you can see, the smallest cave-in
Could trap us in here
Let's get out of here quick
That was not good
That was not good at all
You're right, Izzy
I'm right behind you
Let's get out
Fresh air
We could feel tremors through the ground
I mean, yes, there was opal there
But it's not worth dying for
Yeah, I **** myself when I felt that
Yeah, it could have been enough
To send this whole ceiling down
All right, let's have a look at what we've got
Wow, look how dark that is
Wow, look at the neon green
I just got a flash
Look at this piece
Look at that
Look at it winking at us
Izzy
Are you kidding me?
Look at the red
That's awesome, we've got money here
We have
We've got money here
The misfits have a parcel of Andamooka crystal opal
Featuring the full spectrum of colour, it's in the rough
And there's 226 grams
I know Joe's going to be proud
I can't wait to show him
20 mils of rain last night
I know, it's been absolutely hammering down
Do you think the mine's okay?
I think it'll be a swimming pool, personally
In desperate need of stock
For the Lightning Ridge Opal and Gem Festival
Sophia and Isaac are relying on a freshly dug
Eight metre deep trench on their house claim
To find opal
All right, well it's not completely filled with water
Yeah
How are we going to get down there?
Abseiling's a good idea
There's sort of steps there
We just tie it off on the tree
That's one way of doing it
Sophia's brought along the abseiling rope
This is strong, this stuff
See at the bottom
It's not the safest
There's a fair bit of rock still coming down
There's a lot of loose ground on top
All good?
Okay, all clear
All right, I'm excited
Just be careful, hey
Wait
Mine just stuck, mine just stuck
That whole side just gave in
Watch your head
That's a good start, isn't it?
Jesus Christ
You all right?
So what do you reckon? I mean this
There's a level just down to that point
So this area actually looks good under there
Yeah, that's black ironstone, isn't it?
Awesome
It could be seam opal here or nuts or anything
That's a great sign
It's ironstone and coffee potch
Two huge pointers that there's yellow opal nut here
Shall we have a dig?
Yeah
All right, we'll get in there
Let's drop that cliff down
Hey, look at that, so that
Look how black and shiny this is
Yeah, another good sign
All we need now is opal
It's like purple
I don't know what's going on
But there's definitely elements here
I've never seen before in my life
Cutting or mining
The ironstone's really starting to form
It's getting more colourful
I might get you to spot here
Is that ironstone?
Yeah, that's gone solid
Look at that, you can see it's shining
Now that is a boulder, that's a boulder
Listen to it, it's like glass
We have to get that out by hand, I think
Get it, Sophia, you'll get it out
Just do it, just don't break it
Whatever you do
Do you want me to try and wiggle it out
You get under it
Let's see if I can
It's pretty wedged in there, eh?
Here, here, this is coming out now
That's it, that's it
That's a nice chunk
That's a boulder
Yeah, there's more there, there's more
That's what we want
Yeah
Zach, there's like tiny little nut formations in this
There's something in this for sure
Here we go
The weight of that
Ironstone nut, no colour
It's a fair few of them
Yeah, that's a whole bucket full
It's so tough, like that's the first sign of colour
On this dig in this trench
I can't wait to open them up and have a look
It's hanging up there, we'll break this up
We've got the remote bogger, we can bog that out
Whatever you do, no one goes down in there
Right, eh?
Yeah
No reason to be there
It's pretty weird to look at it now
You know, all the dirt that we want to dig in this mine's done
It's taken us four years, but
Yeah, finally at that point, it's pretty cool
That's it, eh, for this mine
Let's get out of here
Let's go
Sailor day
Yeah, good
Been there four years, surely it looks after us last go
I hope so, I hope so
The Cheels have washed the last dirt from their mine
For two days in an agitator
A converted cement mixer that removes clay
To expose any knobbies, small nodules of opal
You gonna crank her up?
Let's get her done
Let's go
A few moments away from seeing what we've got
The last dirt in the pillar
I think it's the best dirt we've dug in that claim
We've got about 80 tonnes to 100 tonnes in there
So I reckon we're in for a big payday, to be honest
With the tail out leading up to it
And throughout the whole thing
You just ride the anticipation, you know
You don't know what's gonna come, so
Within two seconds, one swipe on the tail out table
You can make 100 grand
Look at that
Pretty quiet up there, boys
We're only getting started
I've already seen a few knobbies like that
Have you?
Yeah
Hopefully the pillar's in around there somewhere
Nothing I'd rave about
I'm not convinced this is gonna be anywhere near
Like last tail out yet
And we have a lot of material
Just a bit small, like no real big money
Yeah, I thought we'd be off to a bit more of a flyer
Than this, to be honest
It's time to reveal the magic, hopefully
We've got a bucket full of yow nuts
We're not really sure what's going on with them
There's a bit of colour
We're definitely gonna saw them all open
I really hope there's something in those boulders
Yeah
Even just one or two would be awesome
Something to take to the festival
Isaac and I found a pocket full of what seems to be
Yower boulder open nuts
Now we're excited to saw them open
This is really the moment of truth for us
We've got Lightning Ridge Festival coming up super quick
We need some king stones
We need some super stuff to show there
We call these wet saws or lapidary saws
It's a 10-inch saw
But you can also put an 8-inch blade on it
Or a 6-inch blade
This is a sintered blade
So it's got the diamond going all the way through it
What I'm doing is I'm sharpening it
By tapping the diamonds
You're exposing the diamond
And you're making them square
And that running against the rock
Cuts beautifully
The water is gonna feed into the lapidary saw
To help to saw through the Yower boulder nuts
The lapidary saw is connected to the generator
Everything's off grid but we're ready to go
Give this one a crack
Let's hope it's a crystal center straight away
But that's all right
It's one in a thousand so
We don't have a thousand though
No we don't
It's got one bucket
This one feels weaker
All right, come on baby
Come on
Useless, that's useless
That's a better cut
That actually sounds good
Yeah, it sounds right
Oh my god
You see what I'm seeing
This is unreal
Sophia, that is tens of thousands of dollars
That is the maddest thing I've ever seen
I've never seen a rock like that
That's our king stone
We got it babe, we did it, we did it
Shaking
We thought we were going home with enough
But I mean this is opal mining
You really, it's a lot of hard yakka
It's a lot of disappointments
And then it's all really just for stuff like this
This is beautiful
It's an absolutely epic Yower nut
There's nothing I can imagine that could happen in my life
That would give me the same buzz as what just happened
The opal whisperers have a Yower boulder nut
Blue green with red and yellow highlights
It's been split and weighs three and a half kilograms
The king stone that we need to turn up proudly
At Lightning Ridge Festival and have something unique
That I'm certain no one else will have
At the Lightning Ridge Opal and Gem Festival
The streets and local businesses of the town
Transform into a stall-laden marketplace
Hello little darling, do you like
My beautiful mum, Suzanne Andreau
For me and a lot of people that know her
She is the ultimate original opal queen
This lady knows everything there is to know about opal
She's been in the business since the beginning of time
Thank you
I've got a couple of people pre-arranged
Over Facebook and everything
We need the money
That's the thing, we do need the budget
Hello, Isaac, how you going, mate?
Hey man, you made it, how was the drive?
Finally, yeah, no, good
You met Sophia?
Yes, no, I haven't actually
How are you? Nice to meet you
What was your name?
Eric
Eric, nice to meet you, Eric
I'm not going to muck around
Remember you told me you had a pretty special piece
Yeah
I wouldn't mind seeing it
Okay, I'll get it, I'll get the specimen
Okay, sounds good
Fresh out of the ground
All right
Doesn't look like much, does it?
It's a dirty old rock
Not at the moment, yeah
Look at that
Not bad
You can see it from here, it's jumping out
I'm sure you have something in mind
Yeah, well, let's get to it
I don't want to insult you either
Thank you
Tell me what you want
What are you looking at?
Okay, we'll cut to the chase
It's 40 grand for both, for the pair
Yeah, that's more than I've got to spend
I don't want to let it go
Would you consider splitting the two up?
Just out of interest, Eric
What did you have in mind for half?
Half?
20,000?
It's got to be at least 30
What about 23?
No
I don't want to let it go
I don't blame you
It's nice
I'm here now
I want to make a deal on this
At least half of one
And look, I can probably do
Meet me halfway between 20,000 and 23
25
25,000 for one?
Yeah
Deal
Okay
Congratulations, buddy
Thank you very much
It makes me so happy that my children
Are interested in taking on our legacy
Can I let go now, Mum?
Can I let go now?
The kids have grown up
Having their holidays
And an opal mine all their lives
So it's pretty much in their blood
Bye-bye
Sorry, Mummy, I'll find you another one
It makes me really, really proud
This opal we found
I've got to clean that up ASAP
Get it all ready
Go to Lightning Ridge
Angel is travelling 17 hours
To New South Wales
For the Lightning Ridge Opal and Gem Festival
To sell her and Izzy's parcel
And part of Opal Joe's precious haul
Mined 40 years ago
The reason I'm sending Angel to Lightning Ridge
Is because it'll expose her
To the best of the best this country's got
Particularly to the buyers
Buyers are ruthless
We've got a lot of pressure on me
I'm hoping, you know, I do Joe proud
Because he's trusting me with all his opal
Here's a million dollars' worth of opal
We're just setting up our booth
For the show
Make sure the stones are displayed
Very nicely and professional
Angel is set up in the high rollers booth
Reserved for high-end opal
With armed guards standing by
Lower up and put that here
Because I need that yellow light
That's the main
Yeah
So Haroon and I are sharing a booth
He's one of our main cutters
He's really good at his job
Like if I have a $20,000 stone
I'm giving it to him
Joe's wife Lindy made the pendant
Cut the stone, the earrings
A bit different to, you know, greasy hands
Covered in dust
A bit out of my comfort zone
But that's the way it is
You've got to look the part
G'day Angel, how's it going?
G'day Paul, nice to meet you
Good to see you again
Yeah
You got any new stock, have you?
Yes, got some, a fair bit of new stock
All right
So you're negotiable on these prices?
Yeah, I'm negotiable
So like virtually as a lot
It'd be $5,000 for a lot as a parcel group
Can you do $5,500?
Sorry
There's not a lot of cutters there
$5,300?
Oh, $5,200 will call it a deal
All right
OK, thanks for that, no worries
He's kind of the buyer for mine and Andy's Opal
He's one of the biggest buyers of the eastern states
$5,200, good deal
It's the biggest sale I've done so far on my own
So, you know, I'm pumped
Joe's given me his high-end parcel
which isn't quite, you know, as much as a house
It's a rare as material
Joe found it in 1982
He's trusting me with it
He's getting a lot of attention
This is our parcel
16.3 ounces in total
Wow, Angel, it's just amazing
I've been in the industry more than 30 years
and I've never seen anything like it
I do have a customer in America
He knows if I ring him, it's something good
Yeah, I know, it's like
You're really going to want to hear this
This is worth a lot of money
So, yeah, hopefully this deal can be made
Hey, Elaine, how'd you go?
Yeah, he does want me to make an offer on it
OK
Facing red on every angle
You can't be keep filming this
You need to leave the premises now, please
The asking price of Opal Joe's parcel is so high
The international buyer requests the negotiations not to be filmed
That was so good
I'm happy
I went well with Elaine
We ended up, you know, making a deal
So I'm happy, she's happy, Joe's happy
It's been a good day
Now it's time to pack up and head back to the desert
That's the last of it
After four years of back-breaking work
The Cheels are scouring through the last load of washed opal-bearing dirt
From their shut-down mine
Starting to fire up now
What have you got, bro?
That one
Big green bar around him
Wow
Bang, another one
That's a nice little stone
Yeah
That's a bit better
Shaping up to be all right
But, yeah, we're hoping the big one's still in there
Hey
What?
Yes, what?
We got one
Let's go far out, look at that
Look at the size of that
That's a big one, guys
Yeah, that's a stone and a half there
15, 20 grand
Look at that one
What have you got there?
Nice one, sissy
Hey, that's faced up already
Yeah
Look out, a knobby with a big red color bar
Unbelievable
That's it, eh?
Let's go and check this out
With our last bit of light for the day
Keen eyes
Some material there
Wow, that's phenomenal
That's better quality than last week
For sure
There's a lot more black there
Yeah
I reckon we've well and truly hit our revised target
There's got to be at least another 200 there
And that's better than last week
Better than 250 there
Quarter of a milly
We were looking for it
I'm gobsmacked, really
I would have never picked it from last season
Never picked it
The Cheels have rare black and crystal opal knobbies
Displaying a full array of colors
In the rough, there's 700 grams
They estimate the value to be $250,000
The most valuable opal haul they've ever found
This is unbelievable
So what's that?
250 grams
Plus that 330 grams we've got for the year
$580,000 this season
Over half a mil
That is crazy
Absolutely specious after that tail out
I mean, quarter of a million dollars
It's an absolute dream come true
When you're going through the tough times
Over mining, the rush of finding opal, being on opal
And having a tail out like we did today
Yeah, I'm just soaking it up
To see Dad succeed, doing what he loves
Yeah, it's a great feeling
Dad deserves this so much
I'm glad that he's finally gotten there
Because he's worked incredibly hard
This is exactly what he needed
Good stuff, mate
I'm already a winner
My kids are unbelievable
But I don't really want much in life
I just want what they're giving me right now
And that's love and support
