Is NASA in Big Trouble after Starship Flight 9 Exploded!? Elon Musk revealed...
It flew again—but still hasn’t reached orbit successfully, and once more, it couldn’t return intact. So the question on everyone’s mind is: When will Starship be ready to carry a crew to the Moon?
That’s becoming a growing concern for NASA’s Artemis program, especially as Starship has experienced multiple explosions this year, including the recent Flight 9.
However, Elon Musk has returned with key updates and important revelations that could restore confidence in this historic mission.
So, what are the concerns surrounding Starship and the lunar program? And more importantly—how is SpaceX planning to overcome them?
Let’s dive into all of it on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
Is NASA in Big Trouble after Starship Flight 9 Exploded!? Elon Musk revealed...
By the end of 2024, many had hoped to witness the first concrete steps toward NASA’s return to the Moon—expecting Super Heavy to land successfully in the Mechazilla arms and Starship to achieve a controlled ocean landing. These milestones were seen as critical markers leading up to the first crewed lunar mission of the Artemis program.
However, after three Starship flights in 2025, while Super Heavy has consistently demonstrated its ability to return safely, the upper stage—Ship—has continued to struggle. Both Ship 33 and Ship 34 exploded during ascent. Although Ship 35 showed improvements by progressing through much of its flight, it ultimately lost control before completing its mission. These repeated failures are now raising serious concerns about Starship’s readiness to support NASA’s Artemis III, currently targeted for launch around mid-to-late 2027—which is now only two years away.

The concern grows even more urgent when you consider the remaining milestones that must be met before Artemis III can proceed. These include building and testing an orbital refueling system, and launching and validating an uncrewed Starship Human Landing System (HLS) mission. The complexity and tight timelines have caused many experts to question whether the program can realistically stay on schedule.
One vocal critic, Robert Zubrin, an aerospace engineer and strong advocate for Mars exploration, recently said, “The current architecture of Artemis does not make sense.” He elaborated that the program’s elements “don’t fit together,” noting that it consists of “five separate elements which have each been funded for different reasons.” His concerns point to the fragmented nature of the Artemis program, which relies on NASA’s SLS and Orion, SpaceX’s Starship, and Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lander—all developed by different organizations, each with their own mission priorities.
