Watch the bidding at Christie’s Old Master’s Part 1 Sale, where Anthony van Dyck’s Andalusian Horse and A wooded landscape achieved £3,428,000. Anthony van Dyck’s first grand-scale depiction of a lone horse has an additional element of rarity and significance: his only surviving landscape in oil can be found hidden on the reverse of the original canvas.

The picture has long been regarded as a preparatory work for a portrait Van Dyck made of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, on horseback. That portrait dates from around the same year, 1621, and is found in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
