The Starship Moon missions are getting closer!
Before landing astronauts on the Moon for NASA’s Artemis program, SpaceX will first perform an uncrewed demonstration flight.
What makes this mission stand out?
NASA recently confirmed it will fly without a payload—prompting debate. Why send a rocket all the way to the Moon without cargo? Is it a missed opportunity for science or supplies?
In today’s episode of Great SpaceX, we’ll break down NASA’s reasoning, explore whether this approach makes sense, and ask if there’s a smarter alternative.
Let’s find out why this no-payload mission might be more important than it seems.

We’re nearly halfway through 2025, and that means one thing—the long-awaited mission to return humans to the Moon is fast approaching. This historic event is currently assigned to Starship, the world’s largest and most powerful rocket, developed by SpaceX. But before astronauts board for that journey, critical testing must be completed. That includes an uncrewed mission designed to demonstrate Starship’s ability to reach and land on the Moon.

This uncrewed mission is vital. It will serve as a rehearsal for the actual crewed landing, giving NASA and SpaceX a chance to validate key systems and operations. However, many have been asking an important question: will this demo flight carry any additional payloads?
Surprisingly, that question was recently answered by NASA officials. In a session with the Lunar Destinations for Human Explorers Steering Committee, Lori Glaze—Acting Associate Administrator for NASA's Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate—revealed that Starship HLS (Human Landing System) will not carry any payloads during its uncrewed landing demonstration.
