SpaceX's Crazily Upgraded Starship Refueling System to Support 1st HLS while NASA & BO...
We have just witnessed a truly breathtaking moment in human history, the kind of event that makes your hair stand on end and reminds you why we look at the stars in the first place. After more than fifty years of silence and distance, humans have finally flown by the Moon once again. It is a monumental achievement that has captivated the world, but let’s be honest with ourselves for a second: as incredible as that flyby was, it still leaves us wanting more. We have seen the craters from a few thousand miles away, but we haven’t felt the lunar dust under our boots yet. Those four astronauts on the Artemis 2 mission probably spent a good portion of their journey looking out the window, yearning to set foot on that gray surface just like their Apollo predecessors did half a century ago.

But for now, that ultimate opportunity remains just out of reach, with the current timeline suggesting that a landing won't happen until at least 2028. To bridge that gap, this mission is going to require the most powerful and sophisticated landers ever conceived, most notably SpaceX's Starship. However, getting a vehicle that large to the lunar surface is not as simple as just pointing it at the Moon and hitting the gas. We are facing a mountain of technical difficulties, with the most glaring challenge being the Herculean task of refueling such a giant vehicle while it is already in orbit. Thankfully, SpaceX and Elon Musk have some rather audacious plans to overcome those hurdles. So, what exactly are the upgrades they have made to handle Starship's orbital refueling, and what about the other massive challenges standing in their way?
Let’s find out everything you need to know on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.

To understand where we are going, we have to look at how the mission profile has shifted recently. For a long time, the plan was for the Orion capsule to meet Starship in lunar orbit, but according to some recent updates, NASA is now considering a crew transfer right in Earth orbit. That’s right, the crew would leave the Orion capsule to transfer over to the Starship HLS while they are still circling our home planet. At first glance, this might seem like a bit of a detour, but it actually makes a lot of sense if you think about the logistics. By transferring in Earth orbit, the crew has much more immediate support from ground control and a much more direct route to the lunar surface. Starship HLS could potentially take the crew directly from Earth to the Moon, land them safely, and then handle the return journey.
