A step by step video outlining the important features you should consider when choosing a new career.
Choosing a new career can be difficult for many of us, and knowing where to start is hugely important.
This short video includes some of the different career opportunities you could consider when thinking about a new job.
Have you thought about a new career path? Do you know how to secure your IDEAL job? Do you have what it takes to land that all important career change?
This video will provide some top tips to help you prepare for career change.
Hi guys, my name is Katie and welcome to this video for how to choose a career.
So this video is all about what job is right for you and where you should be heading towards
in terms of career path.
Okay, firstly, jobs by categories, okay?
So it's important that you know what kind of job you're looking for.
There's many different areas in which you could get into, so from accountancy to engineering,
healthcare, media, armed forces, retail, charity work, social care, anything like that you
could be getting into, okay?
But you need to know where to start and you need to know what industry it is that you
want to be going into, okay?
So if any of these take your fancy, then you should have a good look into that by researching
online about the different types of jobs in that industry, okay?
So discovering your options.
So discover which jobs are most suited to you, okay?
So not all jobs you will be good at, not all jobs will be suited to your personality and
vice versa, that job might not be suitable to you, okay?
So think about your skills and personality.
So what transferable skills and qualities do you have already?
So I suggest that you get a blank piece of paper and write your skills down now, okay?
What are you good at, what are your strengths, what are your weaknesses, okay?
So this will really help you to filter the kind of person that you are and what job is
right for you, okay?
So if you're an introverted person, you may find a job that requires less socialisation
better suited to you, but if you're a more empathetic person, a job in social care could
be well suited to you, okay?
So it's all about finding that right balance, that right level of skills and transferable
qualities and personality in regards to the job position that you are hoping to apply
for, okay?
So creating a personal skills audit.
So this will allow you to find your best skills, okay?
So you can evaluate yourself and determine what characteristics you have before applying
them to a certain career, okay?
So like I said, your skills will ultimately go towards whether or not a career is right
for you, so coming up with a personal skills audit will really help you to narrow down
your job search, okay?
So understanding who you are is an important first step in finding a career that you're
going to love.
So exploring different industries, okay?
So whether it's a corporate company, working for a state-controlled body or being your
own boss, okay?
Figuring out what kind of industry you'd like to be part of is the first stage of finding
that ideal job.
So here we've got private sector, so the private sector is the part of the economy sometimes
referred to as the citizen sector, which is run by private individuals or groups, usually
as a means of enterprise for profit, okay?
So examples of this are large multinational corporations such as Apple and Ford, okay?
Next we have the public sector, so you might think about getting a job in the public sector.
So the public sector is the part of the economy concerned with providing various government
services.
So this is like the police, librarians, public toilet cleaners, train drivers, waste collectors,
any jobs like that that help the public as a whole, okay?
And finally, we have charity sector, so a not-for-profit sector or the voluntary and
community sector, which raises money for charity, working in either a voluntary or paid position,
okay?
So many people seem to forget about the charity sector, and it's not all about working for
nothing.
It can be a paid position, just depends where you're looking and what company you have applied
for, okay?
So just bear that in mind when it comes to working out where you want to be.
Okay, so identifying companies, okay?
So another avenue to consider in your job hunt is what type of employer you want to
work for.
So here we've got self-employment, so do you want to work for yourself?
This covers freelance work, setting up your own business, or buying into an existing business.
Next we have small to medium businesses, so this is usually made up of fewer than 250
employees, and typically they do not have influential power in regards to larger corporations,
who tend to have much higher budgets, okay?
So these larger companies tend to have over 250 employees.
They tend to be global organisations with huge budgets, lots of employees, and extremely
successful in the world of business, okay?
So identifying what kind of company you want to work for is something you should consider
as well.
Okay, so tip one for choosing your career, so your skill set.
I've already mentioned this before, but it's really important.
So what skills do you have?
So what are you good at?
What do you struggle with?
What subjects did you like, or what was you good at school?
What are your top five things that you're good at?
Oh, sorry.
So this is a great list that you should start by identifying your skills.
Like I said, writing a personal skills audit will really help you understand the kind of
person that you are and what skills you already have.
So moving on to tip two is your personality.
So this will go a long way in determining what career path you should go towards.
So a career needs to match your personality if you want to excel in that job, okay?
So understanding what personality characteristics you possess will go a long way to determine
what jobs are most suited to you, okay?
So not all personalities will suit all jobs.
Sometimes your personality might be very specific to a certain type of job, and it's trying
to find what that job is, okay?
So there are lots of resources online to test your personality and determine what kind of
person you are.
Take a look at How To Become's personality test guides, which will give you a strong
indication into the type of person you are, and I've provided you the link for that right
there.
So click that after watching this video because you can have a great idea of your personality
after taking the test in that guide, okay?
So finally we have tip three, which is your passions and your interests.
So what hobbies or passions do you have?
So what do you enjoy doing?
How would you like to spend your free time?
What are you passionate about?
So again, these are all relevant questions you should be asking prior to applying for
a career, okay?
So understanding what you enjoy doing is just as important as knowing where your strengths
lie, okay?
So you need to have a job where you're going to enjoy it.
You don't want a job where you're going to try and get as much time off, or you're always
checking the time to see when it's home time.
You want a job that you're going to excel at, and you want a job that you're going to
love, okay?
So I suggest that you create yourself an action plan.
So consider your current situation that you're in.
So your employment status already, your finances, your stability, okay?
You don't want to start out at the bottom if you have a family, or you don't want to
go into a job position where you have no experience whatsoever, okay?
So understanding your qualifications, your training, and experience.
So if you don't have any training or experience, go out and get some, okay?
It's not hard.
The more experience that you have, the more opportunities you have at your disposal, okay?
So your skills, your personality, and your interests.
I've mentioned these before, but again, understanding the kind of person that you are will go a
long way in regards to choosing the right career path.
So remember, things to consider is what are your short-term and long-term career goals?
So set yourself goals that are realistic to you.
How are you going to reach these goals?
What things are you going to put in place in order to reach those goals, okay?
Constantly review your progress.
If you see that you're not making any progress in that career path, maybe look at something
slightly different.
If you are really passionate about that career path, then go out and get as much experience
as you can.
Even if this means to do some work experience for a couple of weeks unpaid, at least you
will get a foot in the door and you will understand what that industry entails, okay?
Because you might not even like that job.
So create a backup career plan just in case, okay?
So your situation might change, okay?
So you need to adapt to these changes in order to manage and meet your set goals, okay?
Through its life, okay?
Things are bound to happen.
They're bound to happen when you least expect it.
So make sure that you've got a backup plan just in case things don't go according to
your original plan.
So your first short-term goal should be to make a killer CV.
And I've given you a link there to improve your CV writing skills, and this will ultimately
go towards bettering your chances of securing an interview, which again, at the How To Become
link will also give you some invaluable interview technique tips that you can use when applying
for your job positions.
And a little extra help, okay?
There's nothing wrong with asking for a little extra help.
So there's plenty of support available to help you learn about your career options and
making that all-important decision, okay?
So company websites, okay?
So researching is crucial when it comes to finding a career path.
Family and friends, like your family and your friends will be in different jobs, asking
about what kind of jobs they do and what they know other people do might influence
your job decision.
It might make you think of something that you might not have thought of before.
Professional bodies, there's loads of professional bodies that you can get help from in regards
to finding a career.
Tutors are a great way for you to understand different career paths available to you.
Recruitment agencies, again, are another important way for you to improve your career aspects.
Career fairs are extremely useful and they have become relatively successful and they
are more popular nowadays, so there's a lot of career fairs going around, so check those out.
And finally, university careers and employability services.
Universities offer a lot of services in regards to employment, so try and check those out
if you can.
