You know what they say, width isn't everything.
But those people have never sat on a United Airlines seat that crams your two buns into one.
Or shot with a Lomo Instant wide glass.
A camera universally beckoned for for almost ten years.
An Instax-wide, sharp-shooting hunk that breathes life into a format which could use some oxygen.
Let's get wide with it.
A kind of photography that would become part of the human being.
Press a button and have the picture.
Welcome to In an Instant. My name is Ben.
And the Lomo Instant wide glass has finally splashed onto the scene
with a certified doinker of a lens that enables some of the cleanest shots you can get on Instax wide
with a fair bit of shot shaping that is possible by its variety of onboard tools.
Five years ago in 2019 BC, I first filmed a video for the Lomo Instant wide
which is one of very few cameras released for the Instax wide format.
And more or less the only one crafted for creativity
and put at a price point that is reasonably affordable
for the average human who is in this for kicks.
This camera is really fun and is challenged by only the professional tier
Mint Instant Con RF 70 as the best all-around camera for Instax wide
while being essentially the same price as Fujifilm's far more basic Instax wide 400.
The original Lomo Instant wide is great in many departments
including its plastic lens which offers a dreamier alternative
to the plain Jane optics of other wide offerings.
Even though I consider that lens's softer characteristics a benefit
in the 10 years since its release, it has often baffled me
that Lomo never offered a glass lens version of the camera
as they do with other models for Instax square and mini.
At the time of the original camera's development in the 2010s
several prototypes did indeed have a glass lens semi-Frankensteined on there.
I got to see one myself and I was just like, OK, that's great.
Yeah, does it come in mine?
Lomo sat on the concept so long I assumed it was never coming.
But the beautiful monster has finally emerged from its cave
an update with several new features
and also some stuff I wish they had iterated on from its plastic predecessor.
The headline here is of course the lens.
F8 like the SX70, 90mm like its Fujifilm comrade
and a wonderfully designed focusing mechanism that spans infinity
all the way down to 0.3 meters or less than a foot.
Enabling frame-filling compositions
and wide ranging freedom without the need for external accessories.
The lens actually has two fixed apertures, F8
which provides pretty shallow depth of field at closer focusing positions
and F22 for deep focus situations like landscapes.
Sadly, one adjustment Lomography did not make to this camera is the viewfinder
which like the original camera sits drastically off center
and introduces a decent degree of difficulty in framing with intention.
I'm not saying designing a camera with this bizarre film size is easy
but placing a viewfinder centered with the lens
would have made a massive difference in usability
and given it a leg up over the Instax Wide 400's
similarly frustrating viewfinder parallax angle.
Lines within the viewfinder can only do so much to help
and in the end, practice and feel is how you'll create images framed to your liking.
Despite that challenge and the fact that you are guesstimating with zone focus
the images out of this thing are definitely impressive
and it's not very hard to capture something beautiful with it.
When framing and focusing works as anticipated
you'd be hard pressed to have a better time shooting Instax Wide.
I really do believe this camera is pretty singular
and how well it supports the format and what it's offering optically.
And the focus zones are pretty easy honestly.
It's not that hard to tell if you are 1-2 meters away or further or closer than that
which is kind of all you need to determine.
An external strap with distance markers is coming soon
to help you measure shorter distances
and that just should have come with the camera.
A surefire improvement to this model is the light meter
which surprisingly is very good.
The original Wide was hit or miss
and I do feel that they've calibrated this new meter much better.
Exposure compensation also plays a heavy hand
and can swing exposures pretty drastically.
A couple other options include bulb mode
which keeps the shutter open for long exposures
super fun if you like experimenting with light painting or landscapes
and a 1 over 30 mode which locks the shutter speed at 1 30th.
You'd want that if you were shooting with an external flash
using the PC sync port
and don't want to lose ambient light.
And then there's this setting which says 1 6th
on this copy of the camera but this is actually a prototype
and that will be an F 22 mode.
So it locks the camera at F 22
and then auto determines the shutter speed.
Great for landscapes like I mentioned earlier.
In LOMO graphic fashion
you can of course do multiple exposures
which is really fun with the splitzer attachment
so you can do sort of passport style shots or diptychs
which works well on Instax Wide
due to its kind of uncomfortable aspect ratio.
Instax Wide can be difficult to compose with
since it's either really wide or really tall.
And the splitzer lets you use that to your advantage.
The lens thread is 52mm
so there's a lot you can do there
from prism filters to warming filters
to give Instax a little more oomph.
The last thing to mention in terms of controls
is the onboard flash
which works well but for some reason
is toggled on automatically
every time you turn the camera on.
For this camera and for the audience
who are likely buying it
I think the natural state of this camera
should have been flash off
and I am routinely making the mistake
of forgetting to toggle it off between use
and that's kind of annoying.
OK,let's do pros and cons maybe.
Glass lens.
Although I love the plastic lens
on the original LOMO Instant Wide
the glass alternative was always on the wish list
and Christmas came early
because Santa's a little freak like that.
Shot shaping.
I used this term before but basically
I like that there are many ways
to create the image of your desires.
Various adjustments including aperture
shutter speed with exposure comp
and quite a large focus throw from the lens.
If you're coming to this camera
from having only used a first party
Instax Wide camera
you will absolutely delight
in your ability to get creative.
Cons.No accessory mount.
With no ability to confirm focus in camera
I really wish they had put a cold shoe mount
right here so users could mount an external range finder.
Better yet, a hot shoe
would have been highly agreeable
given this camera is ready out of the box
with PC sync flash.
As it stands, you'd basically have to mount
a bracket to this camera to use it effectively
with flash handheld.
On camera self timer.
Like the original LOMO Wide
it comes with a James Bond ass lens cap
with an infrared remote control
to trigger the camera shutter
which is awesome and slick as
but honestly, I'd rather have it on the body
cause I'd be losing caps
and view finder
This is one that's really hard to reconcile
I know it would have been annoying
to have the view finder top mounted
for packability
but look at how old Polaroid pack film cameras
circumvented that.
There are other ways
and it would have been more fun
if I wasn't doing mental gymnastics
every time I was composing
Well, that about does it
for the LOMO Instant Wide Glass
It was pretty striking making this video
thinking about five years passing
since I reviewed the original model
It's a large quantity of time
and like so much has happened
in the continuous growth
of this community and this industry
and it's really wonderful to be a part of that
Thank you to LOMO for letting me use this thing early
Thank you to everyone who has followed along
on this journey for half a decade
and thank you for watching it in an instant

Bye
And this camera has a ridiculously close focusing distance
With the included adapter
Which can get as close as
10 centimeters
That's so close
That's like way too close
