Han Xiangzi, born during the Tang Dynasty, was a mischievous yet gifted figure who became one of the Eight Immortals in Chinese mythology. Likely the great-nephew of the poet Han Yu, he was drawn to Taoism over traditional scholarship, developing supernatural abilities like making peonies bloom instantly and predicting the future. His playful antics, such as changing flower colors and conjuring wine, amazed those around him. Under the guidance of Lu Dongbin, another Immortal, Han Xiangzi honed his Taoist skills. A pivotal legend recounts his fall from the Queen Mother of the West’s peach tree, granting him immortality. Known for his enchanting flute music that could calm storms and summon animals, he became a patron of music and nature, symbolizing harmony with the Tao. His iconic image is a refined gentleman with a flute, embodying art and transcendence. Han Xiangzi’s legacy, celebrated at sites like the Xiangzi Bridge, teaches the power of creativity and balance, leaving an enduring mark on Chinese culture.
