This Natural Science School opened in 1973. It was a residential facility where students would stay for a week and learn about the environment, ecosystems, bird, plant, and aquatic life, while immersed in the middle of the nature.

It was an incredible facility – there was an on-site fish hatchery; a natural water filtration system; rainwater recovery system; organic waste recycling; apiary; a greenhouse; and solar panels, hydro-electric generator, and windmills which provided the school with self-sustaining power. Most of the education was done outdoors, and there were many outdoor facilities as well such as a rope ladder across the river and an aerial course through the trees, and trails for hiking.
There was a maple syrup operation, skiing in the winter, bird-banding, rock climbing, archery, night hikes, machine shop with working machines, and a wood shop. The dining hall accommodated 144 students and there were two large dormitory facilities, as well as offices and the Ecology Centre. The mission of the school was “To help people realize their kinship to the planet earth and to live responsibly upon it.” It was Canada's largest environmental field school.
The local School Board had a mandate that all children should attend at least one week of outdoor education in their elementary school period in either grade 5 or 6, and again in grade 7 or 8. The cost was kept to a minimum so that financially disadvantaged students would not be excluded. (In 1996, the cost for the entire week of transportation, instruction, activities, accommodation and meals was $5 per student!).
The TDSB had 7 of these outdoor facilities, the first being the Island Natural Science School located on Toronto Islands. For many city children, this was the first and only time they would experience being out in real nature.
Sadly – tragically - this School was closed on March 28, 2003 due to lack of funding. The buildings fell into disrepair over the years. This incredible school will sadly never see another student, and the incredible facilities never again be put to use.
