In our crazy world, it's so easy to buy into so many lies about ourselves and about life. While we are always pushing for progress, maybe progress is pushing us over the edge. Here are three lies from modern culture you are probably buying into. One, self-love is everything. Young Americans in particular are told through media, music, and TV that self-love is the answer. This is a lie and contributes to our nation's mental health epidemic. Today, 18% of Americans report that they are struggling with anxiety, 7% with depression, and 4% with suicidal thoughts or actions. Maybe this is because, as people, we should always be trying to better ourselves instead of accepting our unfulfilled potential. When we tell an 18-year-old that they are perfect just the way they are, we stunt decades of growth, improvement, and self-realization, robbing our world of its next great generation. No matter your stage of life, you should always be seeking to improve yourself, not settling today in the name of self-love. Two, you should blame everything on other people. Modern culture has labeled the successful and the powerful as the enemy of the people. Newsflash, rich people are not the problem. Most of them didn't start out that way. They had a and determination to make it a reality. In America, only you are responsible for your destiny. Your life is largely your fault, for better or for worse. And blaming the results of your choices on other people will not solve your problems or make you happy. If you take responsibility for your shortcomings, you can also take responsibility for your successes. Three, your identity is holding you back. Racism, sexism, bigotry, nope. Your identity is not holding you back. In America, you are only limited by your imagination and drive to succeed, not by the color of your skin, your gender, or who you date. Systemic oppression is not limiting anyone's successes, but the narrative is. You have the power to defeat this narrative, despite what modern culture tells you.
