Tosca is an opera in three acts composed by Giacomo Puccini. The libretto was written by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica after the drama La Tosca by Victorien Sardou. The premiere took place on 14 January 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, now the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted by Leopoldo Mugnone. The German-language premiere followed on 21 October 1902 at the Semperoper in Dresden. The premiere at the Deutsches Opernhaus in Berlin on 20 May 1920, conducted by Ignatz Waghalter, was also significant in the history of the work's reception in Germany.

Contrary to popular belief, the story of Tosca is not based on historical events. Rather, the characters and the plot are fictitious. What is historical is the background against which the action unfolds.
