A lot of people, especially college students, believe that raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour would benefit workers and their families. But have they actually considered the real consequences of such an increase?

You know Walmart this company they started they started with one store and now they got hundreds of stores all across the country and
Make tons and tons of money. Is that a bad thing that the the people in charge of Walmart are very rich?
Yes, they're exploiting their employees by not paying them enough for the work that they do
Why do you say that because they're so rich and all they don't actually work in the stores or anything
All they do is sign papers and attend meetings
They're the ones so the guy who like started Walmart he incurred a ton of risk by doing that
You know
He's the one who put down the loans and started got the building and took all the risk to make that happen
So don't you think it's fair that since it's his company. He's able to make a good profit off of it
I mean sure he's able to make a good profit off of it
But it doesn't mean that you shouldn't pay your employees what they actually deserve. Yeah
How do you know what the employees at Walmart deserve think someone who checks bags is as valuable in the company as
Someone who started the company? Well, I don't say that they should make the same but I feel like as the as
How much it costs to live in this country goes up I feel like how much they make should go up to
Just like the minimum wage is about to go up. I feel like that should have been done a long time ago
I'll tell you in Walmart's example
If you took the CEOs of Walmart's salary and divided it between all of the workers at Walmart all the people who are employed
Every single person at Walmart would get about $10
Okay, I just think minimum wage should be raised in general
Yeah, it's like if you have three people working at Walmart and then they raise minimum wage to $15 an hour
Did you think they'd have to fire one person like let's say they were all getting $10 an hour and then they raise it to 15
When they have to fire one person to keep the same profit incentive
I think that Walmart is such a big company that they won't really need to do that
Let's use an example of small business then like I'll say you have a restaurant, you know
And you're paying them all three people $10 an hour. They raise us to $15 an hour
How do you afford to pay that last person more money when the government imposes it on you?
I guess if it's a small business, they just wouldn't be able to do it
Yeah, you have to shut down or fire the person or cut the hours of everyone that would make small businesses really struggle
Yeah, so do you think raising the minimum wage would be a good thing if it's going to hurt all these small businesses like that
honestly, I'm sure I would have a better opinion if I really did some research on it, but I
Couldn't and yeah, they did this in Seattle. They raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour in Seattle
They saw that people's wages were cut people's hours were cut and actually there was a gross
Loss of income for households by $125 a month when they raise the minimum wage
So it's at the opposite of what they actually wanted it to do
Really? I didn't know that. Yeah
They wanted to raise it to $15 an hour by 2020
I believe it did like a four-year or seven-year plan or something like that in 2014
To raise it and actually made people poorer by doing it
And then I think in terms of like the big business thing that you're saying
Like that would only make big businesses want to you know, like a Walmart. We're just using Walmart example again
But like they would want to get kiosks and self-service instead of having people if they raise the minimum wage
You know, you just get a robot to do it for free. That's true. Yeah, I can see that
Well, thanks for talking to me sorry that got kind of off track and we were talking about a lot of stuff
Yeah, is that interesting for you?
Anything?
Yeah. Yeah, I don't I talk about it with my friends a lot
But I feel like talking to people with different points of views is always interesting
