The Sonata No. 1 in F minor op. 2 No. 1 from 1795 is the first of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas with opus numbers. Prior to this, the three so-called ‘Elector’ sonatas WoO 47 were written during lessons with Christian Gottlob Neefe.

Like all the works published under opus 2, the sonata is dedicated to Joseph Haydn, with whom Beethoven took lessons between the end of 1792 and the beginning of 1794. However, it is by no means a pupil's work, but a highly individualised work which, although formally based on his teacher's models, clearly sets itself apart from them in terms of musical style and expression.

In particular, although the first movement of the sonata can be considered an example of an exemplary realisation of the classical sonata form, it must also be seen as a rudimentary anticipation of the basic idea of the first movement of the great F minor sonata op. 57 (Appassionata) due to its conflicting emotional tension. Just as the Sonata op. 10 no. 1 is considered a ‘little Pathétique’, the Sonata op. 2,1 ‘is often called the little Appassionata, probably especially in view of its relationship to op. 57 in its key and the similarity of the last movements with their uninterrupted figuration and excitement’.
