The thought of a minimal way to bake a couple rolls or biscuits seemed fun. Accenting a nice meal went out camping without much more gear for packing in to backcountry. If I want to cook a cake, bread or biscuits for a group, I would likely opt for the Ultra Cook Kit, the 5-WAY cast-iron system or the horizontal Billy Pot Oven (which is just plain fun with how it works and is a literal oven in a pot turned sideways). This reflector oven method is the most simple "Firebox way" and doesn't require many parts (since I would already be bringing the windscreen) which is cool but I'm sure I will use the other Firebox baking systems as well, depending upon the camping circumstances.
Other than caring for my family, exploring ideas is what I live for... Well, that might be taking it a bit too far but it is where I find myself most useful. For me nothing offers as much satisfaction and fulfillment as developing an idea into a finished product after all, that's how I make my living. The best part of the process is when the idea comes. In that moment I feel (I assume others do too) an actual euphoria. My theory is that it's the euphoria that connect you to that idea, literally, the same as when you have a child, people will actually refer to their ideas or inventions as their babies. As with people and their kids it's easy to be very biased in seeing every possible potential in generally grand terms. I must admit that Ive taken projects way to far only to find that the concept simply wasn't as great as I had thought. After having a few years of experience under my belt, I've learned to recognize weaknesses in my concepts much earlier since development can be very expensive. Lol! A lot of ideas only work well in my head. Sometimes I'm actually embarrassed, but you just have to laugh it off and either move on or come up with something better.

I'm right here at home and what I'm
going to do is I have a new idea for the
hex reflector oven and there are also
some Offroad paths that I've taken all
my other off-road vehicles on so I'm
excited to compare the old Ford with how
my other trucks have done on some of
these Trails this hill is one of them
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
light
[Music]
[Music]
than
[Music]
come on come
on I do have some ideas I'm going to set
things up just a little bit differently
and I'm hoping I'll have better success
so here's my wind
screen and here's my freestyle hex I had
some ideas I kind of mocked it up at the
shop and let's just see how it works now
I'm not going to use this as a fire pan
tin I'm going to do this I'm going to
set the stove up directly on the
[Music]
ground one
side and the
next just like
that and our Fire Sticks now I'm
actually only going to use two of the
Fire Sticks CU I want to keep one so I
can use it as a tool once again these
are locking Fire Sticks see how they
won't go backwards so this end is locked
in meaning you can put weight on this
end and can lever your grill out next to
the fire instead of having it right over
the hot coals you can use the radiant
heat what I'm going to do with the wind
screen is I'm going to divide it up
into two
sections pull that pin out so I've got a
section of
six that will go just like
this and then I'm going to take one
section off let's see and then I'm going
to do a section of
four to go around
this
way just like that so I'm going to take
another section
off okay so I've got one panel separated
by itself now and then this will go back
here like that pins that have the
handles I'm going to go into the second
hinge curl rather than at the top and
that will allow me to push this pin
in down
through and then into the ground so you
can see how low that went and I'm going
to put it in the second one so that this
one can also go into the
ground I'm going to tighten things up
get everything where I want
it and then push that into the ground I
was burning the edges of my biscuits and
so I want to put in a little little bit
of a of a
block so what I'm going to do is I
actually brought some tools
here cut
that I'm just going to cut right through
that hinge
curl try to straighten my cut out a
little bit I'm going to cut these
Corners off
because they'll uh they'll be
sharp figure out where I want it the
hinge curls are right up against the
grill plate so now I'm going to make a
mark under on the inside of the stove so
I know where to cut this so that it will
fit try to get it
straight what am I doing
huh all right so now I have this
little airplane looking part that I can
put right here
underneath the grill just like that that
will block the main heat that's inside
of the stove if you put the fire pan tin
on right here it can kind of hang
there's kind of a a rolled Edge that can
kind of hang right on this back panel in
fact it hangs well enough that you can
use this hinge and it'll actually stay
open for you like that so how cool is
that we got our little oven lid
door so let's give this a try I'm just
going to make a quick
little fatwood feather
stick to get this
going going little bit of a breeze there
we got it lit
and away we
go fatwood to the
rescue got some Sage
Brush and then I brought some fruit wood
so I think this is pear really nice good
Hardwood I'm going to open my lid here
look how nice that is see if I can get
it
yeah just like that it's a beautiful
thing this time I'm not going to put my
milk on right away I'm going to kind of
focus on these biscuits and focus on
this oven
experiment and then uh make the milk
gravy right at the end
beautiful I think this is good going it
work there's a lot of heat right there
that is I can't leave my hand on that
that is so hot but the back is very well
insulated the sides are well
insulated I think this is going to work
a lot better maybe I need this to have a
bend in it and have it come up a little
ways just really protect that front
edge and see if we can't get the back
Edge hotter
to where you don't have to turn these
things I don't want to have to turn them
oh they're firm enough I can turn
them yeah they are cooking much faster
than before this is so far it's a whole
different
experience okay so here's something else
I can see the bottoms are getting quite
dark too dark in fact wow so that
aluminum isn't quite enough it's still
getting too hot on that front edge you
see how it's dark it's not quite burned
I just barely saved it just in
time yeah this one's still good
too a few moments
later so it wasn't very long ago that I
stopped the camera and the bottoms are
just dark enough that I'm going to have
to turn these over they're they're
baking very
quickly but yeah the bottoms are nice
and brown everything's moving much more
quickly than it did that first go around
I've got to get my
milk
going and I could have gotten my milk
going right from the beginning with how
fast this is moving this is interesting
so much different than last time
so even with just the two Fire Sticks
I'm able to balance that milk that'll be
a good spot
too let's take a look at these
biscuits oh
yeah they're nice and brown those
biscuits are probably done and put them
on top
just keep them warm and then I can make
my fire a little bigger to get this milk
done here I have my sausage R
[Applause]
mixture just going to put that in there
and let it melt
now that that flame is gone I'm going to
move my biscuits back into the
oven cuz while they are nice and
brown they uh they cooked so fast that
I'm just worried they might be a little
rare on the
[Music]
inside
so we just put them back down in the
oven
try to get this gravy
done the wind's blowing it all
away oh yeah that gravy is ready to
go looks good
they turned out good cooked a little too
fast it's funny how everything wents
kind of the opposite as the first test
so that's not quite
black yeah I don't think it's really
going to taste burnt it's like almost
black but not quite that might taste
burnt get rid of that
all right look at these beautiful
biscuits they are definitely cooked all
the way
through look at that so yeah I'm going
to do this
again we're going to try for version
three come
here come over here behind
me good good sit down oh good
dog good girl I'll give you some
biscuit yeah this is nice and secure
since I have everything pinned to the
ground makes it
nice it's good here Maggie oh oh you got
it stuck to my
fingers that was a good
catch I made a little prototype
for another heat shield I'm going to set
this up very similarly to how I had it
set up last time I do have a couple of
new
parts um the grill plate is actually
slightly smaller than the last one the
last one was very close but depending
upon how you positioned the wind screen
there was one direction that it was
still slightly too big so that's been
sized down literally like a 16th of an I
mean just barely so that's why that's
new and then this is a new folding fire
grate and the reason that this is new is
because we adjusted this angle you can
see how it still doesn't go all the way
flat and that's
intentional because as you use it it
does flatten out a little bit you know
with a couple of burns it stabilizes and
stays the same uh but you want it to
always be peaked up
just a little bit and I'll show you why
here in a
second so let's get the stove out set
this to the
side the reason that you want to have
that up just a little bit is because of
just how low this fire grate sits you
can see these position points are right
at the very bottom and so if this sits
flat you know all the way down then and
it will actually come out so having it
uh just a little bit High here in the
center just keeps it within the the
walls of the stove let's get our Fire
Sticks into position you put the Locking
end into the hole then rotate into the
slot I am going to use a
center uh fire stick I just missed it
too much last time so I've got to get it
put on this time let's get this end
and then the way you put this into
position is slide it over the ends here
so we'll slide these ends
in and we'll put that Center one through
and as this slides this direction once
it reaches that corner then it can
everything can fall back down into their
slots and the grill
plate sits right here so you can see
there's over a qu of an inch of air
space between the heat shield and the
bottom of the grill let's get our
windscreen out and I'm going to set this
up exactly the same way I did last time
set of
four I'm going to put that in
place use these
pins to hold it nice and tight in this
spot pin it down to the
ground just just like
that so just like that I am going to pin
these sides down into the ground
get some Sage Brush going first because
it lights up so easy and we'll put on
some of this pear
wood give our fire some staying
power all right my gravy is nice and hot
now we just need to get it to thicken up
now I did have a
commenter recommend sorry I don't
remember the the name but a commenter
recommended I use self-rising
flour so I got myself some self-rising
flour and I'm hope hoping that the fat
in the
cream will work with this self-rising
flow to make Rue
basically but in the gravy itself
instead of making the roof separately
we're just going to
do it a little bit of a different way it
is a little bit more difficult because
this flower wants
to kind of Clump up and create lumps but
it looks like it's working itself out
the gravy's pretty darn hot let's pull
it
off let it work a little more
slowly so far it's looking pretty good
let's put a little more wood on our fire
keep our biscuits
baking okay my gravy did thicken up
nicely and I think I'm going to go ahead
and keep it off the heat and a little
bit away from the heat keep it warm but
not too hot I'm going to put my lid on
my
gravy so that it
stays
nice and let's take a look at the
biscuits see what they're
doing oo they have raised quite a bit
and they're actually looking quite
beautiful see if I can get an edge up
this Edge is golden brown so it is just
a little warmer on the bottom on this
very front edge
but not to the point to where they're
burning um at some point I might want to
turn them but for now I think I'm going
to go ahead and leave them how they
are take a closer look at our biscuits I
can smell something it smells like it's
maybe getting a little dark so let's
take a look
and see if that front edge is maybe
getting a little too too
Brown let's see if I can lift this up
oh just golden brown but I will turn
them since I have a hold of it
now and let's get this
one these are
cooking at just the right pace not too
fast not too slow I'm really liking this
system you know that first one was too
slow the second one was too
fast and this one seems to be just right
right I figured after we do this test I
would take the pat goats for a walk a
lot of people have been asking to see
the pat goats or asking where are the
pat
goats let's open up our oven and see how
these are
looking they've risen quite a
bit uh but let let's go ahead
and take a look at the
bottoms golden brown on the bottom so
the heat is really nice From Below let's
just turn them
over and the top has firmed up they're
not soft so even turning them over is
not going to smash them but it will help
us Brown the other side nicely can you
believe how beautiful those biscuits are
back there let's let some light in so
you can see him a little
better
hooo golden
Perfection got to love
that let's see how our gravy
looks maybe put it up here and freshen
it up a
bit it's still plenty
warm a little thicker than my last two
batches which is nice
that self-rising flower seems to be the
ticket for making
gravy but I'm not going to leave it on
there very
long I don't want it to get too
thick I think it's time to Plate this
up let me get my
plate and I'm going to this plate is icy
cold just want to warm it up before I
put my biscuits on
there but it'll probably warm up pretty
fast and take a look at these look at
that wooo
Perfection oh I'm very happy with those
results I think for a camping
oven that is very good they are cooked
perfectly inside
oh yeah beautiful
biscuits our beautiful milk gravy look
at
that let's get that chunk of sausage out
there
this definitely turned out the best of
all three
tests very happy with this we just need
to figure out how to produce that part
and uh I'll show you that as soon as we
get it
done wow I love it when you get good
results I had to work for this one man
three times is a charm I guess
not three strikes but uh three
chances good thing I didn't strike out
you know that last time worked so it
wasn't three strikes it was two strikes
and then one home run so turned out
[Music]
awesome what a beautiful day too just
amazing
the mountains still have a lot of snow
on them and it was just yesterday it was
snowing you know but today it feels like
a spring day it's
beautiful it'll be a great day to take
those Pat goats for a walk
[Applause]
Ursa
hey come here what do you guys think
about that name Ursa
that's kind of where we're Landing I
think we could call her uraro I guess
she's a good little
pup Ursa is Latin for little bear I
guess so she is kind of a little bear
there's no doubt about
that let's go let's go
[Applause]
Bill's not liking having the camera on
his
horn he kind of throwing his head around
good girl good
[Music]
girlo herse is getting
big she's about 6 months old now
sh
good what you doing bill
let's go let's go
[Music]
we lost Bill's horn Mount his camera
mount so we can't do the bill cam I'm
still looking for it
though hoping to get lucky
