The Ballade No. 4 in F Minor op. 52 is the last of Frédéric Chopin's four ballades. Completed in 1842 after his return from Nohant-Vic, published the following year and dedicated to Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild, it belongs to his last creative period, which is characterised by more developed tonal means and greater musical complexity.

This piece also differs from its predecessors in that it is more lyrical and reflective, and more harmonically varied. In this last work of the genre, Chopin combines various formal elements such as sonata form, variation and rondo. With the exception of the effective, shattering final sections, Chopin refrains from passionate drama and virtuoso challenges.
