SpaceX Pushing the Limits: Massive Starship V2 Ground Testing after S34 Failed...
Two nearly identical failures—definitely not what SpaceX or anyone wanted to see! But now that it’s happened, the priority is making sure it never happens again.
One of the biggest factors in preventing repeat issues is ground testing. SpaceX will likely make major adjustments to this phase to ensure Flight 9 is better prepared than ever.
So what changes can we expect? How will SpaceX refine its testing to push Starship closer to success?
Let’s dive into it on today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
SpaceX Pushing the Limits: Massive Starship V2 Ground Testing after S34 Failed...
March has brought two Starship flights, and while Super Heavy’s successes are something to celebrate, the back-to-back failures of Ship have dampened the mood slightly. Now, all focus is on preparing for the next flight, ensuring that the mistakes of Flight 7 and Flight 8 aren’t repeated.
At this moment, both Booster 16 (B16) and Ship 35 (S35) have completed their cryogenic tests. Notably, S35 went through three rounds of testing before returning to the Production Site. According to SpaceX’s usual process, the next steps will include static fire and wet dress rehearsal tests.
Looking at recent testing patterns, we can see some significant changes—especially with Flight 8. Ship 34 underwent an unusually long and powerful static fire test, which suggested a more rigorous approach. However, one surprising move was the lack of a wet dress rehearsal. While there was a failed attempt on March 3 that could be considered a wet dress rehearsal, SpaceX had not originally planned for it.

There are two ways to interpret this. First, SpaceX may have felt confident enough in their systems that they deemed the extra test unnecessary. Second, and perhaps more likely, they were in a rush to meet the launch window and decided to skip it.
If Flight 8 had been a success, no one would have questioned this decision. But since it failed, the level of scrutiny on SpaceX’s testing process has increased. While the cryogenic and static fire tests went smoothly, issues still emerged during flight. This raises some key questions: Were the tests truly optimized to catch all potential problems? Was skipping the wet dress rehearsal a miscalculation? Did SpaceX do everything possible to ensure mission success?
